Flashfood, a leading North American surplus grocery platform, has announced its availability across the entire Mid-Atlantic Division of Kroger. The expansion includes more than 100 stores across the region, following a successful pilot program in Richmond, Virginia. The move signals a deepening of the partnership between the two entities as they seek to address retail food waste while improving consumer access to affordable, high-quality fresh nutrition.
The expansion comes at a time of heightened consumer sensitivity to grocery inflation and a broader corporate shift toward "Zero Hunger | Zero Waste" environmental and social governance (ESG) targets.
The decision to scale Flashfood division-wide was supported by significant performance data from a 16-store pilot launched in the Richmond area in 2025. According to data provided by the companies, the initial rollout achieved the following milestones:
Consumer Savings: Shoppers saved nearly 700,000 dollars on fresh groceries through the platform.
Environmental Impact: Diverted more than 290,000 pounds of food from landfills, directly contributing to Kroger’s waste-reduction metrics.
Customer Retention: The program saw high levels of engagement, leading Kate Mora, President of Kroger Mid-Atlantic, to characterise the expansion as a "natural next step."
"Food as Medicine" and Kroger Health Integration
A significant differentiator in this expansion is the collaboration with Kroger Health. Rather than viewing Flashfood solely as a waste-management tool, the partnership is positioning it as a foundational component of the "Food as Medicine" initiative.
The integration focuses on two primary pillars:
Affordability and Nutrition: A 2025 survey indicated that 70% of Flashfood shoppers reported a healthier diet after using the platform. By discounting fresh produce and proteins, the system makes healthy choices the "easy choice" for budget-conscious families.
Educational Programming: Kroger Health and Flashfood will launch a series of free virtual nutrition classes. These sessions, led by Kroger Health’s nutrition team, will provide tips on preparing healthy meals using the seasonal and fresh ingredients typically found on the Flashfood app.
Data-Driven Shrink Management
For retail operations leaders, the Flashfood platform serves as a modern, data-driven alternative to traditional markdown or disposal processes. Jordan Schenck, CEO of Flashfood, emphasised that the partnership is building a "modern shrink management system" that provides retailers with real-time visibility into surplus inventory.
By digitising the markdown process, Flashfood allows Kroger to:
Optimise Recovery: Recapture value from products that would otherwise result in total loss.
Improve Labour Efficiency: Automating the notification and sale of surplus goods reduces the manual labour required for markdown rotations.
Support ESG Reporting: Providing verifiable data on landfill diversion to support corporate sustainability disclosures.
The Kroger Mid-Atlantic expansion is a component of Flashfood’s broader growth trajectory. The platform is now available in more than 2,000 grocery stores across North America, establishing it as a primary technology partner for major retail conglomerates.
As the grocery sector continues to navigate a high-cost environment, the ability to merge "waste-reduction" with "health-equity" provides a dual benefit for both the P&L and brand reputation. Industry observers expect that the success of the Mid-Atlantic rollout will likely lead to further integration across other Kroger divisions through 2026 and 2027, potentially standardising surplus food platforms as a baseline requirement for modern grocery retail.
