Italian coffee brand Lavazza and joint venture partner Yum China Holdings have expanded their retail estate in Hong Kong with the opening of their fifth store, situated within the Cheung Kong Center II development in Central.
The launch marks a swift scaling of the brand's physical presence since opening its inaugural Hong Kong location in Central in November 2025. Following the commissioning of the fifth site, the joint venture plans to double its footprint to approximately ten operational units across the territory in the coming months.
To coincide with the real estate milestone, Lavazza has introduced its signature Buffalo Milk Latte across all Hong Kong branches, positioning the business as the first branded coffee chain in the market to merchandise buffalo milk beverages.
"Hong Kong is a mature and dynamic coffee market where consumers place a high value on quality, flavour, and brand experience — all of which are central to Lavazza's identity as an iconic Italian coffee brand founded in Turin in 1895," said Allegra Armitano, Chief Marketing Officer of the Lavazza-Yum China joint venture.
"Since opening our first store in Hong Kong, we've been encouraged by the market response. We are excited to introduce our signature Buffalo Milk Latte to Hong Kong and look forward to broadening our offerings for local coffee lovers."
Premium Retail Footprint
Lavazza's retail distribution in Hong Kong concentrates on prime Grade-A commercial towers and high-density retail districts across Central and Causeway Bay.
The design architecture incorporates Italian styling tailored for urban professional footfall. The latest store at Cheung Kong Center II features a dedicated design installation showcasing the Lavazza Carmencita moka pot. Conceived for the coffee roaster in 1979 by Italian designer Marco Zanuso, the conical moka pot serves as a visual hallmark anchoring the company’s brand heritage within contemporary retail environments.
Buffalo Milk Latte and Beverage Innovation
The introduction of the Buffalo Milk Latte adapts a high-volume product platform from mainland China, where the SKU recorded sales surpassing 1.2 million units during 2025:
🥛 Buffalo Milk Latte: Utilises natural buffalo milk, which provides a higher natural fat structure and dairy sweetness to create a smooth, ice cream-like texture without added sugar, paired with Lavazza espresso and served in both hot and iced configurations.
The beverage joins an extensive menu of standard espresso preparations alongside specialised liquid recipes:
🌾 Sicilian Pistachio Oat Milk Latte: A plant-based specialty beverage combining espresso with oat milk and roasted Sicilian pistachio notes.
🍎 Apple Juice Americano: A fruit-and-coffee hybrid combining crisp apple juice with chilled espresso.
🍊 Orange Juice Americano: A citrus cold-brew alternative blending tart orange juice with dark roast coffee.
Phased Menu Rollout across Winter
The joint venture has outlined two additional beverage launches scheduled to land across Hong Kong stores over the winter trading window:
☕ Bicerin Series: Returning following an initial seasonal debut in late 2025, the traditional layered beverage from Turin combines espresso, drinking chocolate, and cream.
🍰 Liquid Tiramisu: Making its commercial debut in the Hong Kong market, the dessert-inspired beverage translates the multi-layered cocoa, coffee, and mascarpone flavours of classic tiramisu into a chilled drinkable format.
Speciality Dairy in Asian Coffee Retail
The introduction of buffalo milk into Hong Kong's competitive coffee landscape reflects an expanding commercial trend across East Asian cafe chains, where operators are deploying alternative dairy sources to differentiate standard white coffees.
While oat and almond milk alternatives have become established fixtures for dairy-free consumers, full-fat buffalo milk provides formulators and baristas with elevated dairy solids, natural sweetness, and superior foaming properties. This allows operators to deliver rich, dessert-like mouthfeel without incorporating artificial syrups or emulsifiers.
By scaling proven product successes from its mainland Chinese joint venture network into Hong Kong's high-rent financial corridors, Yum China and Lavazza are testing regional cross-pollination of beverage platforms to drive higher ticket averages across morning and afternoon dayparts.
