The latest food and beverage industry news and trend analysis

Healthcare major Abbott has utilised the stage at CES 2026 in Las Vegas to unveil Libre Assist, a new generative AI-powered feature integrated into its digital ecosystem. Designed for the millions of people living with diabetes in the U.S., the technology aims to shift diabetes management from reactive tracking to predictive decision-making.

Unlike traditional food logging apps that provide data only after a meal is recorded, Libre Assist is engineered to offer glucose impact predictions and actionable guidance before consumption.

Generative AI and Predictive functionality

The core of the new feature is its use of generative AI to analyse food intake in real-time. Users can input their meal via text description or by snapping a photo. The algorithm then identifies ingredients and projects the potential impact on glucose levels using a simple colour-coded rating system:

🟢 Green: Minor impact.

🟡 Yellow: Moderate impact.

🟠 Orange: Major impact.

Beyond the rating, the system provides immediate, practical advice to mitigate glucose spikes, such as suggesting food order changes (e.g., eating proteins before starches) or swapping specific ingredients.

Integration with CGM Technology

While the AI provides the forecast, the feature closes the feedback loop using hard data from Abbott’s Libre Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors. After the meal, the app correlates the initial prediction with the user's actual glucose response, allowing individuals to validate the AI's guidance against their body's unique physiology.

Marc Taub, Vice President of Technical Operations for Abbott's diabetes care business, explained the strategic differentiator:

"People living with diabetes need more than apps that just log food and fall short of helping them with meal decisions. That's why Abbott built Libre Assist – a free, and advanced predictive tool that delivers personalised meal guidance and works with our leading Libre technology to deliver real-time glucose insights. For the first time, people have smart, in-the-moment support right at their fingertips to make a confident choice every time they eat."

Availability and Access

Abbott has confirmed that Libre Assist acts as a value-add update rather than a premium tier. It is accessible within the existing Libre app (via the Insights tab) with no additional monthly fees, purchases, or separate prescriptions required.
