Naturally sourced colour producer Oterra has announced a strategic partnership with sustainability intelligence platform HowGood to provide Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) across selected lines within its ingredient portfolio.
The collaboration supports Oterra's overarching 2030 Sustainability Strategy, structured around three core pillars covering nature, climate, and people. By integrating HowGood's sustainability intelligence platform, Oterra aims to connect site and supply chain data directly to finished ingredients supplied to food and beverage manufacturers.
The initiative responds to rising demand among downstream brands for granular environmental data to support corporate Scope 3 emissions reporting and supply chain decarbonisation.
Supply Chain Transparency and Decarbonisation
The first phase of the partnership will see Oterra deploy HowGood's methodology to calculate PCFs for designated products within its natural colour range.
While Oterra already maintains internal site and supply chain metrics, the collaboration bridges operational data with customer-facing transparency. The resulting insights enable food and beverage manufacturers to evaluate ingredient-level environmental impacts, supporting sustainability disclosure mandates and reduction targets.
"Our customers are looking for greater transparency across their supply chains in order to reduce carbon emissions and other impacts," said Vera Karmeback, Head of Global Sustainability at Oterra. "This partnership with HowGood provides the transparency, data and methodology needed to drive decarbonization in Oterra and our customers."
Rachel Calomeni, Senior Vice President of Growth and Innovation at HowGood, added: "Granular sustainability metrics are no longer a nice-to-have for food companies – they’re imperative to making meaningful progress in sustainability commitments, improving transparency with suppliers and consumers, and understanding the true environmental impact of their products."
2030 Sustainability Strategy Implementation
The partnership builds upon Oterra's 2030 Sustainability Strategy, which establishes targets spanning climate action, responsible sourcing, and ecosystem protection.
Company leadership emphasised that achieving these objectives requires collaborative engagement across upstream agricultural suppliers and downstream manufacturing customers.
"Partnerships are essential if we are to create lasting change," Karmeback noted. "Our sustainability strategy recognises that collaboration across the value chain is critical. By combining Oterra's deep expertise in naturally sourced colours with HowGood's sustainability intelligence, we can help customers make more informed decisions and support the transition to a more sustainable food system."
The initial deployment of Product Carbon Footprints is currently underway across selected product lines within Oterra's international manufacturing and distribution network.
