Italian coffee group Lavazza has launched Tablì in the United Kingdom, introducing a capsule-free single-serve coffee system centred around compressed coffee tabs manufactured without aluminium, plastic, or chemical binders.
The system combines a dedicated countertop brewing appliance with single-dose and double-dose tabs formed entirely from compressed roast and ground coffee. The product debuts exclusively through department store retailer John Lewis from September, ahead of broader commercial availability across Lavazza's digital direct-to-consumer platform and third-party online stockists from 1 November 2026.
The launch follows five years of research and development and the registration of 15 technical patents, originating from Lavazza’s 2020 acquisition of Italian coffee tech startup Caffemotive. The platform targets expanding demand for waste-reducing domestic single-serve solutions that eliminate primary packaging while preserving extraction quality.
"Tablì represents a major breakthrough not only for Lavazza, but for the coffee industry as a whole," said Emanuele Pellegrino, Regional Director for Lavazza UK & Nordics. "By combining a 100% coffee tab with a specially designed machine and unique brewing technology, we are introducing an entirely new product category and a coffee experience that, until now, simply didn't exist on the market."
Compressed Tab Technology and Packaging
The core technical development of Tablì centres on eliminating external casings, membrane filters, and gelatinous coatings typically required to contain ground coffee under high brew pressures.
Each tab consists solely of roast and ground coffee compressed into a solid puck under mechanical force. Because the units lack synthetic materials, spent tabs can be disposed of directly alongside municipal household food waste and organic compost streams following extraction.
To protect freshness and shelf life without enclosing each tab in an individual aluminium or plastic shell, Lavazza engineered protective secondary packaging trays that shield the unencapsulated coffee pucks from oxidation, moisture, and aroma loss prior to insertion into the machine.
Machine Engineering and Crema Plus Architecture
The proprietary Tablì brewing unit is engineered specifically to accommodate and extract unencapsulated coffee tabs, utilizing mechanical and digital automation:
Servo-Assisted Piston: The brewer incorporates an ergonomic, bean-shaped sliding interface paired with a servo-assisted piston mechanism, facilitating smooth insertion, mechanical sealing, and automatic spent-tab ejection.
Multi-Format Extraction: The machine accommodates diverse cup volumes, calibrated for single espresso, lungo, and double espresso extractions.
Crema Plus System: Proprietary hydraulic parameters regulate water dispersion and brew pressure to produce a dense, persistent crema layer.
Connected Smart Architecture: The appliance features integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, compatibility with voice assistants including Amazon Alexa and Google Home, and digital management through the proprietary Tablì mobile application.
Tablì Coffee Blends and Formulations
The Tablì system enters the UK market with five distinct roast and ground formulations adapted from the roaster's core retail and food service portfolio:
☕ Qualità Rossa: An Arabica and Robusta blend balancing rich cocoa notes with dried fruit undertones.
🌸 Qualità Oro: A 100% Arabica formulation delivering floral aromas and delicate fruit acidity.
🍫 Espresso Intenso: A dark roast profile characterised by spicy aromatic accents and an aftertaste of cocoa and baked biscuit.
🌰 Espresso Ristretto: A concentrated, high-intensity roast engineered for full-bodied texture and dark chocolate delivery.
🌿 Decaf: A 100% Arabica decaffeinated blend featuring toasted cereal and hazelnut aromatics with a chocolate finish.
Commercial Pricing and UK Distribution
The commercial architecture for Tablì establishes a dual hardware and recurring consumable revenue model across premium retail channels:
Appliance Pricing: The Tablì brewing machine carries a recommended retail price (RRP) of £199.
Consumable Formats: Tablì tabs are packaged in 12-count boxes, priced at an RRP of £5.49 for single-dose tabs (approx. 46p per unit) and £6.89 for double-dose tabs (approx. 57p per unit).
Phased Rollout: Initial commercial availability is secured through an exclusive brick-and-mortar and digital retail partnership with John Lewis, followed by wider availability via Lavazza.co.uk and third-party digital marketplaces commencing 1 November 2026.
The launch positions Lavazza in direct competition with established aluminium capsule ecosystems and emerging paper- and compostable-pod alternatives, testing commercial adoption of zero-packaging formats in the UK's domestic single-serve market.
