Costa Coffee's automated self-serve platform, Costa Express, has completed a major nationwide enhancement programme across more than 13,000 machines throughout the United Kingdom.
The capital investment programme integrates software updates, mechanical calibration, and recipe reformulations designed to refine four core operational parameters: beverage quality, liquid temperature, cup-fill consistency, and dispensing velocity. The project represents one of the largest infrastructure overhauls across the operator's automated estate, intended to elevate on-the-go coffee standards for host retail partners and consumers.
The rollout arrives as Costa Express was named the nation's favourite premium vending brand, according to Allegra World Coffee Portal's Automation UK research, leading consumer preference metrics across self-serve automated platforms.
"Customer expectations of coffee on the go have never been higher. People rightly expect great-tasting, consistent coffee wherever they choose to enjoy it, whether they're visiting a coffee shop, travelling or stopping at their local convenience store," said Mark Cumming, Costa Express Director at Costa Coffee.
"Costa Express already operates at significant scale, but leadership means never standing still. We continually listen to our customers, monitor performance and invest in the parts of the experience that matter most. This programme represents a significant investment across more than 13,000 machines, delivering meaningful enhancements to quality, consistency and convenience."
Hardware and Recipe Refinement
Informed by customer feedback and continuous telemetry machine data, the technical upgrades target precise beverage execution across high-turnover drinks:
☕ Recipe Reformulations: Enhanced recipe specifications rolled out across popular menu options, led by an optimised milk-and-espresso extraction profile for the Flat White.
🌡️ Temperature Optimisation: Mechanical and software adjustments recalibrating water delivery and steam temperatures to preserve flavour clarity and ensure optimal drinking temperature upon dispense.
📏 Cup-Fill Precision: Sensor and volumetric dispensing refinements to deliver repeatable, uniform fill levels across all cup formats, reducing spill risk and liquid variability.
⚡ Accelerated Dispense Speeds: Algorithmic software revisions reducing cycle times for selected beverages, expediting queue clearance during peak morning and commuter travel hours.
Operational tracking from earlier rollout phases indicates that the technical updates have driven measurable increases in customer satisfaction scores alongside a clear sales volume uplift across the core Flat White range.
Value for Retail and Venues
The enhancement initiative provides commercial utility for host venues, where automated coffee stations serve as high-margin drivers of convenience store footfall, forecourt dwell time, and travel hub basket attachment.
In fast-paced food-to-go, travel retail, and forecourt environments, automated machine downtime, inconsistent fill levels, or slow transaction speeds can directly impact consumer trust and repeat visitation. By deploying automated updates that reduce serving times and enhance organoleptic quality, Costa Express enables retail partners to maximise throughput during high-traffic dayparts while safeguarding margin realisation per square metre of retail floor space.
"We believe convenience should never mean compromising on quality. Our ambition is to continue raising the bar for coffee on the go and make great Costa coffee available to more people, wherever their day takes them," added Cumming.
Costa Express confirmed that telemetry monitoring, consumer insight tracking, and iterative machine software deployments will remain central to its continuous operational improvement programme across the UK automated network.
