Starbucks Corporation and Suntory Beverage & Food have commenced a nationwide rollout of Japan's first Starbucks-exclusive vending machines.

Rolling out sequentially from mid-September 2026, the dedicated automated retail units stock a curated four-product lineup of ready-to-drink (RTD) canned and bottled coffees. The initiative introduces dedicated branded hardware into Japan's extensive automated vending channel, expanding consumer access to the coffee brand outside its traditional retail coffee shop network.

Alongside placement in the exclusive green machines, the four product lines will also be introduced progressively across Suntory's wider national vending network.

Dedicated Vending Hardware and Brand Identity

The bespoke machines feature an exterior design finished in Starbucks' signature dark green palette, displaying the company's Siren logo alongside the consumer messaging "Enjoy Starbucks anytime, anywhere."

The visual presentation incorporates graphics depicting various daily drinking occasions, designed to distinguish the machines from standard multi-brand Japanese vending units. In a channel where equipment typically dispenses broad assortments of competing soft drinks, teas, and canned coffees from multiple manufacturers, the single-brand livery functions as high-visibility street marketing across transportation hubs, commercial offices, and pedestrian zones.

The deployment connects Starbucks' premium brand recognition with Suntory's established vending route operations, logistics replenishment networks, and technical machine servicing infrastructure throughout Japan.

Ready to Drink Product Portfolio and Pricing Architecture

The product assortment available through the machines spans short cans, multi-serve bottle cans, and resealable plastic bottles, establishing a tiered pricing structure that addresses both mass-market convenience and premium ready-to-drink coffee segments:

☕ Starbucks Coffee Signatures Black: A new 380g aluminium bottle can formulated with Starbucks' Espresso Roast beans to deliver a full-bodied profile and lingering roasted finish. The pack design features the founding year "1971" layered behind the Siren logo (recommended retail price ¥200 excluding tax / ¥216 including tax).

🍮 Starbucks My Retreat Caramel Macchiato: A renewed 280ml resealable plastic bottle compatible with hot and cold vending dispensing, balancing Starbucks coffee with rich milk and sweet caramel notes (recommended retail price ¥240 excluding tax / ¥259 including tax).

🖤 Starbucks My Coffee Time Black: A 185g short can brewed from select Arabica beans calibrated for low perceived bitterness and astringency (recommended retail price ¥155 excluding tax / ¥167 including tax).

🥛 Starbucks My Coffee Time Café Latte: A 185g short can combining deep-roasted coffee with smooth milk, packaged in signature green trade dress (recommended retail price ¥155 excluding tax / ¥167 including tax).

All four expressions are formulated with a 13-month shelf life, ensuring compatibility with standard ambient and heated vending stock-rotation cycles.

Partnership

The introduction of dedicated vending machines represents an operational evolution in the 21-year ready-to-drink alliance between Starbucks and Suntory in Japan.

Since first partnering in 2005 to distribute chilled cup coffees through Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets, the two companies have systematically broadened their joint portfolio across ambient wholesale channels. While Starbucks operates approximately 2,000 coffee shops across Japan, the vending channel provides physical distribution access across locations where opening full-service cafes is commercially unviable.

For Suntory, integrating exclusive Starbucks hardware provides an avenue to drive higher transaction values within Japan's vending landscape. By pricing standard short cans at ¥155 to match conventional canned coffee lines while positioning larger formats up to ¥240, the portfolio offers vending operators higher cash margins per dispense.

The rollout will continue across high-density urban corridors and commercial facilities nationwide throughout late 2026.
