Hormel Foods brand Hormel Black Label has expanded its packaged bacon portfolio with the commercial introduction of Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon, deploying a multi-compartment, perforated packaging architecture designed to extend product freshness and curb household food waste.
Rolling out to select retail stockists nationwide, the line extension adapts the company's core Original Bacon into three individually sealed, perforated pouches. Each sub-compartment houses four bacon rashers, allowing consumers to separate, open, and cook dedicated four-slice portions while preserving the barrier seal and freshness of the unopened sections.
The packaging introduction addresses changing household structures and food waste concerns within the chilled meat fixture, where conventional bulk-pack formats frequently expose unconsumed rashers to ambient air once opened.
"Bacon has always been a food people crave, but the way people enjoy it continues to evolve," said Aly Sill, Senior Brand Manager for the Hormel Black Label Bacon brand. "With Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon, people can enjoy the bacon they love in a way that fits their lives. This innovative package makes it easier to enjoy bacon on their terms, whether it's a quick breakfast, a meal for one, a weekend brunch or simply a moment worth savouring."
Packaging
The format represents a departure from traditional single-cavity plastic retail sleeves, utilising modified barrier compartments to target single-serve and weekday cooking routines:
š„ Three-Compartment Perforation: Engineered with three distinct, tear-away sections containing four slices each, providing a total package weight of 12 ounces (approx. 340g).
š”ļø Preserved Barrier Integrity: Retains an airtight hermetic seal across unopened pockets, mitigating oxidisation, moisture migration, and premature spoilage in domestic refrigeration.
š³ Preparation Flexibility: Formulated with Hormel Black Label Original Bacon, enabling consumers to portion single-serve breakfasts, sandwich builds, or recipe inclusions without resealing, freezing, or re-wrapping leftover cuts.
By dividing the standard 12-ounce portion into smaller operational units, the design mitigates post-opening product deterioration, providing a technical packaging solution to domestic food waste without requiring consumers to purchase individual single-serve packs at a higher unit premium.
Single-Serve Meal Prep and Smaller Households
The launch aligns with wider demographic shifts in North American grocery shopping, where the proliferation of single-person households and dual-income homes has increased demand for portion-controlled fresh proteins.
Conventional bacon packaging often compels consumers to prepare large batches simultaneously or risk discarding dried-out strips after several days in the refrigerator. By offering sub-divided four-slice allocations, brand owners can lower purchase hesitation among smaller households while positioning packaged bacon as an accessible ingredient for weekday lunches and casual evening meals, rather than an indulgence restricted to weekend family breakfasts.
For supermarket stockists, portion-controlled meat formats provide an avenue to capture incremental sales from shoppers seeking convenience and portion discipline within the chilled breakfast fixture.
Retail Distribution and Pricing
Hormel Black Label Portion Pack Bacon has commenced retail distribution across major US grocery retailers and supermarket multiples.
The product is available in 12-ounce multi-packs across select locations of:
Retail Accounts: Walmart, Meijer, and Albertsons stores nationwide.
Pricing: Retailing at a suggested retail price (SRP) between $5.97 and $6.97 per 12-ounce package.
The line extension joins Hormel Black Label's wider range of cured and uncured bacon lines, including thick-cut, low-sodium, and flavoured varieties across North American retail channels.
