Anchor Packaging, now part of the Georgia-Pacific Foodservice Solutions platform, and Pizza Hut have been awarded the 2026 Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) Recycling Leadership Award for Package Design Innovation. The recognition celebrates the development of a new wing bowl container that addresses the dual challenges of maintaining food quality during transit and improving the recyclability of foodservice packaging.
The redesign, announced earlier this year, was engineered to provide superior food protection for delivery and carryout orders, ensuring consistent meal quality.
Operational Benefits in Foodservice
The new Wing Bowl was designed to streamline kitchen operations while enhancing the end-consumer experience. A key functional update is the ability to sauce wings directly within the container, which reduces prep time and increases operational efficiency for staff.
Furthermore, the structural integrity of the container allows customers to shake the bowl to redistribute sauce upon arrival. This design feature aims to deliver a freshly prepared quality for take-out orders, addressing a common pain point in the delivery segment where food quality often degrades during transit.
Advancing Packaging Sustainability
Beyond its performance in the foodservice environment, the Wing Bowl was highlighted for its contribution to material recovery and sustainability. The collaboration focused on several technical design improvements:
Material Composition: Incorporation of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (PP).
Recyclability Enhancements: The removal of carbon black and the reduction of mineral fillers to facilitate more efficient material recovery.
Circularity: Creating a scalable source of food-grade recycled PP, providing a supply for brands and recyclers targeting circular packaging solutions.
This design approach aligns with the APR's goal of unlocking the future of plastics recycling by encouraging designers and manufacturers to develop packaging that is compatible with current recycling infrastructure.
The 2026 APR Recycling Leadership Awards acknowledge packaging designers, manufacturers, and innovators who make measurable improvements to the recycling of plastic packaging. This latest award reinforces the impact of collaborative partnerships in achieving circularity within the food and beverage industry.
