North American breakfast major WK Kellogg Co has announced an accelerated timeline to eliminate all artificial colours and the preservative BHT from its entire cereal portfolio and packaging lines.
The enterprise is executing the reformulations a full year ahead of its initial commitment schedule. Commercial processing of updated formulations across primary lines, including Kellogg's Froot Loops and Kellogg's Apple Jacks, will commence later this year, with initial shipments reaching retail stockists before year-end.
The operational overhaul addresses expanding consumer demand for recognisable ingredient decks, while supporting the manufacturer's on-pack SPOONS nutrition framework across mass retail channels.
Natural Colour Formulation
To execute the portfolio-wide transition at commercial scale, WK Kellogg Co has directed capital investments into its manufacturing facilities to support recipe adjustments while preserving existing taste profiles and visual attributes.
The simplified ingredient strategy replaces synthetic dyes with colourants derived from natural sources, including fruit juices, vegetable concentrates, and plant-based ingredients:
đŽ Natural Red and Orange: Derived from concentrated fruit and vegetable juices to maintain visual intensity across core loops and flakes.
đ Natural Yellow and Green:Â Formulated using plant-based botanical extracts and fruit concentrates.
đ Natural Purple and Blue:Â Sourced from natural fruit and plant extracts engineered to match original rainbow colour spectrums without synthetic dyes.
Additionally, the business confirmed it is ahead of schedule to eliminate the synthetic antioxidant preservative BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) from the remaining small portion of cereal liner packaging that currently utilises it.
Doug VanDeVelde, Chief Growth Officer at WK Kellogg Co, stated that extensive consumer testing was conducted to confirm that plant-based colour solutions maintained original visual spectrums and flavour profiles without compromising operational quality standards.
School Foodservice Reformulation
The full-portfolio transition builds upon initial regulatory and formulation shifts executed across the manufacturer's institutional and retail pipelines earlier in the year.
Key operational milestones in the phase-out strategy include:
School Foodservice Compliance:Â Reformulated all cereal SKUs supplied into US school food programmes to be free from artificial colours prior to the retail rollout.
New Product Innovation Controls:Â Discontinued the development and launch of any new product SKUs containing synthetic colours starting in January.
SPOONS On-Pack Guide:Â Aligned the ingredient simplification push with the company's SPOONS on-pack nutrition guide, supporting category-wide reductions in sodium and sugar alongside increases in dietary fibre and whole grains.
Jean-Baptiste Santoul, Chief Operating Officer at WK Kellogg Co, noted that the accelerated execution reflects ongoing investments in updating manufacturing processes and packaging specifications to align with evolving consumer preferences.
Retail Distribution
The updated recipes and packaging formats will commence physical retail distribution across North American supermarket, mass, and grocery channels before the end of the year.
By achieving full portfolio removal of artificial colours and BHT ahead of schedule, WK Kellogg Co positions its core brand lineup to comply with heightened clean-label expectations across major retail stockists.
