Fast-food chain KFC UK & Ireland has entered the breakfast cereal segment through a brand licensing collaboration with British high-protein cereal challenger SURREAL.
Named 'KFCereal', the limited-edition, hoop-shaped cereal is seasoned to replicate KFC's signature recipe of 11 herbs and spices. The release marks the quick-service restaurant operator's initial brand entry into ambient morning goods, accompanied by an unconventional serving suggestion recommending consumers pair the savoury cereal with warm KFC gravy rather than traditional dairy milk.
The product debut is timed alongside university Freshers Week, targeting student demographics and younger consumers known for flexible breakfast habits and non-traditional snacking combinations.
"Our 11 herbs and spices have been doing a pretty good job on chicken, so we thought we'd see what they could do for breakfast," said Elspeth Allen, Brand Manager at KFC. "We wanted to take something people know and love and give it the KFC treatment. And what better way to do that than with a bowl of cereal and a pot of our iconic Gravy?"

Nutritional Specifications and Savoury Formulation
The partnership translates savoury fast-food flavour chemistry into the technical matrix of extruded, plant-based breakfast hoops.
While breakfast cereals are overwhelmingly formulated around sweet cocoa, fruit, or honey profiles, SURREAL has adapted its core formulation architecture to support savoury seasoning blends. Each 48g serving provides:
🍗 High Protein Content: Delivers 19 grams of plant protein per portion to align with sports nutrition and active lifestyle criteria.
🌿 Low Sugar Profile: Formulated with 1 gram of sugar per serving, avoiding the sugar density typical of standard commercial breakfast cereals.
🥣 Savoury Seasoning: Coated with a savoury spice mix engineered to emulate the proprietary flavour profile of KFC's fried chicken coating.
Each box contains approximately five servings, packaged in branded cartons combining SURREAL's minimalist packaging typography with KFC's red-and-white visual identity.

Brand Partnership
The co-branded project illustrates broadening experimentation in cross-category licensing, where legacy foodservice brands partner with agile direct-to-consumer FMCG challengers to drive brand reach and cultural visibility.
For SURREAL, which launched in 2022 offering high-protein, zero-sugar alternatives to heritage childhood cereals, the release follows prior co-branded limited editions with specialist coffee roaster Grind. Partnering with KFC enables the digital-native startup to leverage the intellectual property of a global fast-food brand without altering its core low-sugar manufacturing principles.
For KFC, the launch offers high-impact brand exposure across morning dayparts where the chain historically maintains limited operational presence in the UK, bypassing physical restaurant kitchen investment in favour of ambient packaged goods.
