Retail multinational Walmart has introduced its first-ever restaurant food integration within its digital Express Delivery service, enabling users to order freshly prepared meals from in-store Subway branches.

Beginning this month, the initiative allows customers to order Subway menu items directly through the Walmart application or website. The orders can be fulfilled as standalone deliveries or bundled alongside standard Walmart Express Delivery grocery and general merchandise orders, promising delivery in 30 minutes or less.

The rollout represents a significant operational shift in how the retail giant utilises its physical footprint to capture a larger share of the convenience and quick-commerce food markets.

By integrating prepared foodservice directly into its primary online shopping ecosystem, the company aims to simplify daily meal decisions for digital shoppers while maximising the asset value of its in-store concession spaces.

App Integration and Delivery Logistics

The technical integration allows users to access the complete Subway menu, customise individual toppings, and complete their transactions through a single digital basket.

To maintain transparency and encourage transaction volume, Walmart is keeping Subway's digital pricing consistent with standard in-restaurant menus. The service is structured around a flat Walmart Express Delivery fee, removing hidden third-party delivery service costs often associated with restaurant delivery platforms.

Additionally, participating Subway locations within Walmart stores will offer exclusive menu items specifically developed for the digital platform to drive customer engagement and app retention.

According to Tracy Poulliot, Executive Vice President of eCommerce and Marketing at Walmart US, the future of retail relies on consolidating everyday consumer needs into a unified digital experience. She highlighted that leveraging Walmart's proximity to consumers alongside its fulfilment scale allows the business to streamline daily shopping routines.

Expansion and Regional Scaling

The service has officially gone live across selected stores in several key US states, capturing a diverse demographic base ahead of a wider national rollout:

🗺️ Connecticut – Establishing initial Northeast regional coverage.

🌴 Florida – Launching across key Southeastern metropolitan delivery networks.

🍑 Georgia – Capitalising on established Southern retail hubs.

🌰 Ohio – Providing digital coverage across major Midwestern markets.

🔔 Pennsylvania – Serving Mid-Atlantic suburban and urban consumer bases.

🤠 Texas – Deploying rapid fulfilment across high-volume Southwestern locations.

Following this initial phase, Walmart and Subway plan to scale the digital delivery network rapidly, with target expansion set to reach approximately 1,400 store locations by the end of the summer trading window.

Longstanding Tenant Partnership

Subway is currently Walmart's largest in-store restaurant tenant, operating under a commercial relationship that commenced in 2004. Today, the sandwich chain operates inside thousands of Walmart stores, serving millions of shared retail customers daily.

Damien Harmon, President of Subway North America, stated that the integration represents a natural evolution of the 20-year relationship between the two brands. He noted that the joint venture builds upon a shared commitment to value, product freshness, and convenience, expanding the reach of Subway's menu directly to the devices of Walmart's digital shopper base.
