Sidel, a leading global provider of packaging equipment and services, has announced the launch of "Returnable PET – Still Water." The new packaging solution is purpose-built specifically for the still water market, addressing the growing demand among beverage producers and retailers for innovative solutions that reduce waste and promote circularity.

The development of the bottle is heavily driven by increasing consumer expectations regarding reuse and an evolving regulatory environment, particularly within the European Union, which is mandating stricter packaging circularity metrics.

Industry First Design Unlocked for Still Water

Historically, beverage producers offering returnable still water in PET have had to rely on bottles originally designed to handle the high internal pressures of carbonated drinks. By designing a bottle exclusively for still water, Sidel has successfully removed the structural constraints associated with carbonation.

Jerome Neveu, Packaging and Mould Product Manager at Sidel, stated that beverage producers are no longer limited to heavy-duty carbonated designs. By introducing a format specifically tailored to still water, one of the largest bottled beverage markets globally, the company is unlocking significant lightweighting opportunities alongside highly customisable design options.

Technical Specifications and Circularity Metrics

The removal of carbonation constraints allows for a highly optimised material distribution, resulting in a more efficient and sustainable container for high-volume producers.

Key technical and operational attributes include:

  • Lightweighting Advantage 🪶 The new bottle is 10% lighter than the lightest 1-litre returnable carbonated water bottles currently used for still water applications.

  • Lifecycle Durability 🔄 Engineered to withstand up to 25 industrial washing cycles, delivering consistent mechanical performance from start to finish.

  • Equipment Compatibility ⚙️ The design is fully compatible with Sidel’s entire EvoBLOW blow-moulding range, simplifying integration for existing manufacturing partners.

  • End of Life Recycling ♻️ Fully compatible with existing PET recycling streams, ensuring true bottle-to-bottle circularity once the 25-cycle service life is complete.

Customisation and HORECA Market Appeal

Beyond its mechanical performance, the Returnable PET – Still Water bottle provides extensive aesthetic flexibility. Available in capacities ranging from 0.5 to 2 litres, the format supports both cylindrical and distinctive square shapes, allowing brands to replicate the signature look of their single-use portfolios in a reusable format.

A critical feature for the premium market is the ability to incorporate textured surfaces. This design choice helps mask the inevitable scuffing that occurs during multiple reuse and washing cycles, preserving a glass-like, premium appearance. This durable aesthetic is particularly essential for the HORECA (hotels, restaurants, and catering) sector, where visual presentation is a primary driver of consumer perception and brand equity.

As regulatory pressures surrounding single-use plastics continue to mount globally, Sidel’s purpose-built returnable solution provides the still water industry with a highly scalable, commercially viable path toward closed-loop packaging.
