German drinks manufacturer Berentzen-Gruppe has entered preliminary discussions with US-based spirits company Sazerac regarding a potential full takeover.
Berentzen-Gruppe, which trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, confirmed that the discussions relate to a potential voluntary public takeover offer by Sazerac to acquire 100% of the company's outstanding share capital.
The announcement follows market speculation regarding interest from the Louisiana-headquartered producer. Berentzen-Gruppe stated that discussions remain ongoing and that no final terms have been settled, adding that it will update capital markets and the public in line with regulatory disclosure requirements.
Berentzen Portfolio and International Footprint
Founded in 1758 and headquartered in Haselünne, Lower Saxony, Berentzen-Gruppe is one of Germany’s oldest and most established commercial alcoholic beverage manufacturers.
The group's brand portfolio includes:
Berentzen: The company's namesake range of traditional German schnapps, fruit liqueurs, and seasonal spirit specialities.
Puschkin: A mainstream commercial vodka and flavoured vodka portfolio distributed across Europe.
Strothmann Original: A heritage grain-distilled German Korn and schnapps brand.
Tres Países: A blended rum range targeting the value-to-mid-tier spirits market.
Beyond its core alcoholic beverage divisions, Berentzen-Gruppe operates non-alcoholic operations, manufacturing branded and private-label soft drinks alongside automated fresh juice dispensing systems under the Citrocasa brand. The group maintains commercial distribution across more than 60 international export markets.
Sazerac Global Expansion
The pursuit of Berentzen-Gruppe aligns with an active period of portfolio consolidation and international expansion for Sazerac.
Based in New Orleans, Sazerac oversees a global portfolio of roughly 450 spirits, wine, and liqueur brands, led by flagship labels including Buffalo Trace, Sazerac Rye, Southern Comfort, and Wheatley Vodka.
The proposed transaction follows a sequence of significant commercial acquisitions and corporate bids by the privately held US firm:
Au Vodka Acquisition: In August 2026, Sazerac agreed to acquire UK-based premium flavoured vodka brand Au Vodka to expand its footprint in European ready-to-drink and flavoured spirits segments.
Brown-Forman Bid: Earlier in summer 2026, Sazerac submitted an unsolicited $15 billion acquisition proposal for Jack Daniel's owner Brown-Forman, which the Brown family and board rejected in July, citing misalignment with the group's long-term independent vision.
Svedka Vodka Integration: In 2024, Sazerac acquired Svedka vodka from Constellation Brands as the wine and beer conglomerate streamlined its operations to concentrate on fine wine and high-end spirits assets.
A successful transaction for Berentzen-Gruppe would provide Sazerac with direct manufacturing infrastructure and route-to-market distribution networks across mainland Europe and the DACH region (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland), broadening its distilled spirits presence into traditional European liqueurs and regional spirits categories.
