Sazerac Company has announced the acquisition of the Garrard County Distilling facility in Lancaster, Kentucky. The transaction marks the latest operational expansion for the enterprise across the Commonwealth of Kentucky, providing additional distilling capacity to meet international demand for its spirits and bourbon portfolio.
The newly acquired asset joins Sazeracās established distilling network in Kentucky, which includes Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, and The Glenmore Distillery in Owensboro.
Facility Infrastructure and Workforce Expansion
Opened in 2024, the Garrard County Distilling site spans approximately 210 acres in Lancaster. The facilityās operational infrastructure comprises two large-scale column stills alongside two 20,000-square-foot barrel maturation warehouses.
Sazerac will integrate the location's distilling equipment and storage assets directly into its broader manufacturing network. The enterprise expects to recruit additional operational personnel initially, with headcount projected to expand as processing throughput scales at the site.
Jake Wenz, President and Chief Executive Officer of Sazerac, stated that the addition of the Lancaster facility provides essential distilling capabilities to support global demand growth across the group's product line. Wenz noted that Sazerac currently employs nearly 3,000 people across its Kentucky operations, highlighting that the site integration will support further workforce development in the region.
Kentucky Capital Investment
The acquisition aligns with a multi-year capital deployment programme executed by Sazerac across its Kentucky production assets to expand distillation, bottling, and maturation infrastructure.
Key recent investments across Sazerac's Kentucky operating network include:
š„ Buffalo Trace Distillery:Ā Completed a ten-year, $1.2 billion expansion project in January 2025, incorporating a new still house, boiler house, expanded visitor centre, bottling facility, 20 fermenters, and 19 barrel ageing warehouses.
šŖµ Barton 1792 Distillery:Ā Directed approximately $50 million over the past five years into a new boiler house, additional fermenters, expanded bottling lines, and three ageing warehouses that expanded barrel storage capacity by 25 per cent.
š¾ The Glenmore Distillery:Ā Invested roughly $40 million since 2020 to upgrade processing capabilities, barrel equipment, distillery controls, and high-speed bottling operations.
š¬ Laurel and Taylor Counties:Ā Allocating capital to construct new barrel ageing warehouse facilities to expand maturation footprint across strategic regional corridors.
Regional Economic Impact
Local and state officials in Kentucky welcomed the investment, noting the acquisition will reactivate substantial industrial assets and generate economic opportunities in Garrard County.

Kentucky House Speaker Pro Tempore David Meade added that Sazerac's acquisition reflects continued corporate investment in Kentucky's signature bourbon manufacturing industry, returning a major regional production asset to active commercial operation.
