Global bakery, sweet goods, and chocolate ingredient manufacturer Puratos has announced a major expansion of its sustainable sourcing operations by enrolling approximately 30% of its US wheat flour volumes into mass balance regenerative agriculture programmes.
The initiative, executed in collaboration with key agricultural supply chain partners, marks a transition from localised pilot schemes to commercial-scale implementation within the company's US operations. The expansion is designed to support the group's broader target of sourcing 50% of its raw materials from regenerative farming systems by 2030.
By implementing these structured sourcing models, Puratos aims to establish a more resilient agricultural raw material supply whilst addressing growing food industry demand for ingredient transparency and lower environmental impact.
Outcome Based Agricultural Practices
The regenerative agriculture framework deployed by Puratos focuses on delivering measurable, outcome-based ecological improvements at the farm level. The initiative is structured around three primary environmental pillars: enhancing soil health, supporting regional biodiversity, and improving local water management.
To achieve these goals, Puratos collaborates directly with growers, agricultural cooperatives, and commercial milling partners to implement several core regenerative farming methods:
🌱 Crop Rotation: Alternating crop species across planting cycles to naturally disrupt pest habitats and replenish soil nutrient profiles.
🚜 Reduced Tillage: Minimising mechanical soil disturbance to preserve organic structure, prevent erosion, and enhance biological activity.
🌾 Cover Cropping: Planting secondary vegetation between primary harvest seasons to improve soil organic matter, regulate water runoff, and capture carbon.
These practices are designed to improve the long-term biological function of the soil, rendering agricultural systems more resilient to extreme weather variations and stabilising long-term crop yields.
Commercial Supply Chain Integration
Integrating regenerative agriculture into high-volume commercial food production requires models that align with existing industrial logistics. Puratos utilises a mass balance approach for this initiative, allowing sustainably grown wheat to be integrated into standard milling and distribution networks whilst ensuring equivalent volumes are accounted for across the value chain.
According to Luther Hardin, Senior Procurement Manager at Puratos USA, the strategy focuses on addressing the practical realities faced by farmers. Hardin noted that agricultural producers are under significant pressure from weather volatility, fluctuating yields, and long-term economic viability. He emphasised that the role of ingredient suppliers is to work alongside these primary producers to build scalable, robust supply chains that remain commercially viable.
By utilising established supplier partnerships and structured reporting frameworks, the company intends to provide commercial baking and confectionery customers with reliable, scaled volumes of wheat flour tied to documented environmental improvements.
Aligning Formulation and Operations
As corporate buyers increasingly seek to reduce Scope 3 emissions and satisfy consumer demands for responsible sourcing, the feasibility of sustainable ingredients in industrial manufacturing has become a critical focus.
Michael Gleason, Product Director at Puratos USA, stated that industrial food manufacturers require solutions that fit seamlessly into their existing operational setups. Gleason highlighted that regenerative agriculture must move beyond theoretical concepts to function effectively within commercial ingredient formulations, high-speed production lines, and standard operating environments.
The scaled US wheat initiative builds on foundational programmes first established by Puratos in 2022. The data and operational insights gathered from these ongoing agricultural partnerships will continue to guide the company's long-term sourcing strategies across both North America and its international ingredient supply chains.
