Speciality chemical manufacturer Lubrizol has announced its commercial entry into the agricultural crop care sector, introducing the ZYRA family of products to support chemical formulation across crop protection, plant nutrition, seed treatment, and biologicals.
The launch applies Lubrizol's speciality chemical synthesis and formulation capabilities to agricultural input manufacturing. The initiative is engineered to help agrochemical manufacturers develop stable, resilient, and regulatory-compliant solutions amid shifting regulatory oversight on co-formulants and growing performance requirements for active ingredients.
"Agriculture represents an important long-term growth opportunity for Lubrizol and a natural extension of the science, formulation expertise and customer collaboration that defines our business," said Eduardo Pedreira, President of Lubrizol Surface Sciences. "By bringing these proven capabilities to the agricultural value chain, we aim to help customers address increasingly complex formulation challenges and contribute to more productive and resilient solutions."
Five Dedicated Formulation Platforms
The ZYRA portfolio is structured around five functional technology platforms engineered to resolve specific physical and chemical stability hurdles in agricultural tank-mix and packaged formulations:
ZYRA sperse: Hyperdispersants engineered to wet, grind, and stabilise active ingredients within high-load suspension concentrates and complex dispersion systems.
ZYRA flow: Rheology modifiers formulated to provide efficient suspending power at low inclusion rates, preventing active settling during extended storage.
ZYRA mul: Specialised emulsifiers designed to build robust interfacial barriers for emulsions and complex suspo-emulsions.
ZYRA wet: Wetting agents and humectants calibrated to govern droplet spread, substrate coverage, and surface evaporation rates on target foliage.
ZYRA fix: Binders and film-forming agents engineered to optimise spray retention, droplet adhesion, abrasion resistance, and seed-treatment dust-off control.
Rising Complexity in Agrochemical Chemistry
The introduction of the ZYRA range addresses operational and regulatory challenges confronting global agricultural chemical manufacturers.
Agrochemical formulators face stricter regulatory standards governing the environmental profile and toxicity classifications of inert ingredients and co-formulants. At the same time, commercial applicators demand higher active loadings, tank-mix compatibility across combined biological and synthetic chemistries, and extended physical stability under variable ambient temperatures.
"Agricultural formulators are being asked to achieve more performance while managing greater technical, regulatory and operational complexity," explained Fernando Vinagre, Global Business Director for Agriculture at Lubrizol. "Our role is to work alongside customers from early formulation through commercial scale-up, combining application insight, comparative data and technical support to help them develop solutions they can validate and bring to market with confidence. ZYRA is the first expression of that approach, beginning with technologies designed around real formulation needs."
Collaborative Four-Stage Model
To support agrochemical developers moving from laboratory evaluation to pilot and full-scale production, Lubrizol Agriculture Solutions has paired each launch grade with comparative trial data, application guidelines, and baseline starting recipes.
The division's technical support structure operates across four distinct development phases:
Diagnostic Stage: Identifying specific formulation and physical stability challenges linked to selected active ingredients.
Development Stage: Structuring candidate recipes based on verified starting points and treat-rate parameters.
Validation Stage: Benchmarking physical properties, spray mechanics, and active efficacy against established industry standards.
Commercial Scale-Up: Providing technical process assistance, raw material consistency, and supply chain infrastructure for full-scale commercial manufacturing.
The ZYRA product range is available immediately to agricultural formulators and chemical producers worldwide through Lubrizol's Surface Sciences division.
