pladis has expanded its McVitie's brand beyond biscuits in China with the launch of a newly developed McVitie's Flipz chocolate-coated pretzel range.
Marking the brand's debut in the Chinese market, the launch forms part of pladis' broader commercial strategy to build McVitie's into a £1 billion global brand. While a limited selection of McVitie's biscuits is already available in China, the new product platform is formulated around local shopping habits and eating behaviours, incorporating bespoke flavour profiles, smaller bite-sized formats, and domestic manufacturing partnerships.
The initial commercial rollout commenced across Shanghai and Guangzhou, with distribution expanding into additional Chinese cities in 2027.

Flavour Formulations and Product Formats
The new range combines McVitie's brand equity with the Flipz chocolate-coated pretzel format, engineered into a smaller, bite-sized piece to reflect domestic snacking habits.
The launch introduces three distinct flavour variations developed specifically for Chinese consumers:
🍵 Matcha Honey: A tea-infused chocolate coating pairing earthy matcha notes with sweet honey.
🍋 Lemon Basque Cheesecake: A dessert-inspired formulation balancing citrus acidity with rich cheesecake notes.
🍫 Chocolate Hazelnut: A classic confectionery profile combining smooth chocolate and nutty hazelnut notes.
David Murray, Chief Commercial Officer at pladis, stated that while McVitie's is established for biscuits, its future international expansion will rely on broadening the brand across the wider snacking sector through alternative product formats. Murray added that the Chinese snacking market requires formulations tailored to local preferences rather than
standard international export products.
"China is one of the world's most exciting snacking markets. We've developed this range around local tastes and shopping habits because we believe long-term success comes from understanding what consumers want, not simply exporting products that work elsewhere.
Retail Distribution
To support the commercial rollout, the products are manufactured domestically in China through an approved pladis co-manufacturing partner.
Commercial distribution is structured across digital commerce platforms and physical retail stockists:
E-Commerce Marketplaces: Available across major digital storefronts, including Tmall, JD.com, and Douyin.
Physical Retail Stockists: Physical store distribution established across Costco, Metro, RT-Mart, Yonghui, Lawson, and FamilyMart.
The initial availability in Shanghai and Guangzhou provides an operational base ahead of an expanded national retail rollout planned for 2027.
Chinese Biscuit and Snacking Market
The market entry targets substantial commercial scale in China, which represents the world's third-largest sweet biscuit market behind the United States and Brazil. According to market data cited by pladis, China's sweet biscuit sector is valued at approximately £5 billion, having expanded at a 5.6 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past decade.
The product introduction follows pladis' international brand extension strategy for McVitie's in other global markets, including McVitie's Joy in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
Concurrently, pladis is utilising operational insights gained through its established presence with premium chocolate brand Godiva in China to inform McVitie's retail execution, digital channels, and supply chain strategy across the region.
