North American speciality ingredients distributor LBB Specialties has announced a commercial partnership with biotechnology firm Ruby Bio to advance the market readiness of its fermentation-derived emulsifier platform.
The collaboration focuses on customer engagement, market development, and commercialisation planning across North America. The initiative is designed to prepare food, beverage, and personal care manufacturers for a new generation of fermented, clean-label, and palm-free emulsifiers produced from renewable and upcycled feedstocks.
The development comes as manufacturers face mounting pressure to reduce their reliance on palm-derived ingredients, simplify supply chains, and meet corporate sustainability targets without compromising on the functionality of their formulations.
Commercialisation Timeline
The commercial relationship will initially focus on aligning prospective customer applications with Ruby Bio's production scale-up as the company progresses toward key regulatory milestones.
Initial production of the fermentation-derived emulsifiers is scheduled to begin later in 2026. This will be followed by an anticipated self-GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) determination in 2027, which will facilitate broader commercial adoption in food and beverage applications.

At the core of Ruby Bio’s manufacturing platform is a precision fermentation process that utilises naturally occurring yeast. The yeast is engineered to convert renewable and upcycled feedstocks into high-performance emulsifying agents.
Unlike traditional chemical synthesis or heavy agricultural processing, this biological production method is designed to offer several functional and environmental advantages:

LBB Specialties will lead the commercial market development activities, leveraging its technical sales organisation and distribution network across the food, nutrition, life sciences, and personal care sectors in the United States and Canada.

While the immediate focus of the partnership remains on the emulsifier platform, both companies have indicated that Ruby Bio’s broader biotechnology platform holds potential for future collaborations involving other food ingredients and speciality chemical applications.
