Kraft Heinz brand Philadelphia has announced the US launch of Philadelphia Lactose Free cream cheese, marking the brand's first entry into the lactose-free cream cheese segment. Scheduled to roll out across major nationwide retailers in August 2026, the product is formulated to deliver the taste and texture of original dairy cream cheese for lactose-sensitive consumers.
The launch forms part of Kraft Heinz’s ongoing portfolio modernisation strategy, aiming to expand category participation by addressing evolving consumer dietary preferences and digestive wellness needs.
Functional Formulation
The development of Philadelphia Lactose Free addresses a significant consumer base in the United States, where an estimated 50 million individuals experience lactose intolerance. According to market research cited by Kraft Heinz, the global lactose-free dairy market is projected to reach nearly USD $28 billion by 2033, driven by sustained consumer demand for digestive-friendly dairy options.
Following a two-year research and development process, the formulation combines traditional dairy ingredients with enzyme processing to maintain product integrity:
🧀 Real Dairy Base: Formulated with fresh milk and real cream, avoiding plant-based substitutes or synthetic thickeners.
🧬 Lactase Enzyme Addition: Incorporates lactase enzymes to break down lactose sugars, making the dairy base digestible for lactose-sensitive individuals.
🌱 Clean Label Profile: Manufactured without added preservatives, artificial flavours, or synthetic dyes.
🥣 One-to-One Substitution: Functions as a direct 1-to-1 substitute for standard cream cheese across culinary applications, including baking, cooking, and spreads.
Retail Expansion
The introduction expands Philadelphia's addressable consumer base while reinforcing its position within the US cream cheese category. By positioning the product as a versatile ingredient for cooking and baking alongside morning breakfast usage, the business aims to drive incremental volume across multiple eating occasions.
Maddy Zingle, Vice President of Marketing at Philadelphia Cream Cheese, stated that the development was focused on providing lactose-sensitive consumers with a real dairy option that avoids flavour or textural compromises in cooking and baking applications.
Philadelphia Lactose Free will commence its national retail deployment in August 2026, securing placement in the refrigerated dairy aisle alongside the brand's core product portfolio.
