Kraft Heinz has expanded its ambient grocery footprint in Canada with the commercial launch of the Heinz Soup Collection, marking the brand's inaugural entry into the Canadian ready-to-eat soup segment.
Rolling out to grocery retailers nationwide this month, the lineup introduces six ready-to-eat recipes packaged in flexible, easy-to-open pouches. The introduction marks the first time a major food manufacturer has introduced a pouch-based format to Canada's ambient soup fixture, where metal cans continue to account for more than 80% of total condensed and ready-to-eat retail sales.
The launch broadens the company's Canadian portfolio beyond condiments and traditional canned tomato soup, targeting consumer demand for convenient, restaurant-style meals that eliminate preparation steps.
"Canadians know Heinz for making everyday foods better, and we see an opportunity to bring that same standard to more parts of the grocery store," said Kelly Fleming, Chief Marketing Officer at Kraft Heinz Canada. "Soup is a category Canadians already love, but one that we believe is ready for something new. We've paired carefully crafted recipes with a more convenient format to deliver a satisfying, ready-to-eat option for the aisle."
Recipe Portfolio and Flavour Architecture
The collection focuses on comfort-led recipes formulated with whole vegetables, combining classic homestyle culinary profiles with globally inspired flavour combinations:
🍜 Homestyle Chicken Noodle: A traditional poultry broth prepared with chicken pieces, tender noodles, and diced vegetables.
🥥 Thai Style Chicken Coconut Curry: Combines chicken with coconut milk, warming spices, and aromatic curry seasonings.
🍅 Hearty Tomato and White Bean: A thick tomato-based broth layered with tender white beans and Mediterranean herbs.
🥔 Cheesy Potato: A rich, velvety potato soup blended with savoury cheese notes and seasoning.
🍄 Rich Mushroom: An earthy mushroom formulation engineered for deep umami flavours and creamy mouthfeel.
🎃 Curry Butternut Squash: Pairs sweet butternut squash with aromatic curry spices for a smooth, warming autumnal profile.

Flexible Pouch Packaging
A primary commercial differentiation of the launch is the move away from traditional metal cans toward flexible pouch architecture.
According to market figures cited by the brand, 76% of Canadian households purchase soup annually. However, conventional canned formats often require kitchen utensils such as can openers, alongside additional liquid dilution in the case of condensed recipes.
By packaging ready-to-serve portions in flexible, tear-open pouches, Kraft Heinz provides consumers with an ambient, portable format suited for workplace dining, rapid home lunches, and on-the-go heating occasions. The packaging format also offers retail grocers a differentiated merchandising profile across centre-store fixtures dominated by traditional cylindrical tin cans.
Ambient Category Expansion
The Canadian launch aligns with Kraft Heinz's broader commercial strategy to revitalise mature centre-store grocery categories through packaging and recipe innovation.
While Heinz has historically maintained a core presence in Canadian soup aisles through canned tomato soup, the new pouch collection allows the manufacturer to compete directly in the higher-margin, ready-to-eat convenient meal sector. By formulating the recipes with whole vegetables and hearty textures, the brand aims to capture trade-up spend from shoppers seeking convenient alternatives to scratch cooking during the autumn and winter trading windows.
The Heinz Soup Collection is currently rolling out across supermarket multiples and grocery banners throughout Canada.
