General Mills has completed the elimination of certified colours across its entire US cereal portfolio, fulfilling its summer 2026 commitment. The milestone builds upon the company's removal of certified colours from its K-12 school food portfolio in March 2026 and marks significant progress toward a broader enterprise-wide transition.
The operational achievement reflects ongoing investments in recipe reformulation across leading breakfast cereal brands, aligning processing standards with consumer demand for recognisable, clean-label ingredient decks.
With flagship brands including Lucky Charms and Trix now reformulated without certified colours, approximately 90 per cent of General Mills' US retail portfolio has completed the transition. The business remains on track to eliminate certified colours from its full US retail roster, encompassing fruit snacks and baking lines, by the end of 2027.
Bethany Quam, President of Big G Cereal at General Mills, stated that the milestone reflects how the business is evolving alongside consumer expectations while continuing to deliver taste, quality, and value across its brand portfolio.
Clean Label Milestones and Timeline
The manufacturer's strategy to eliminate certified colours across its US operating network follows three primary compliance targets:
🎒 K-12 School Foods Portfolio: Complete as of March 2026.
🥣 US Cereal Portfolio: Complete as of summer 2026.
🛒 Total US Retail Portfolio: Scheduled for full completion by the end of 2027.
Product Innovation and Nutritional Alignment
The ingredient simplification push coincides with an accelerated product pipeline designed to address shifting dietary preferences. During the current financial year, General Mills plans to launch more than twice as many new products aligned with evolving consumer nutrition demands compared to two years prior.
The upcoming product launches will focus heavily on higher protein and dietary fibre content, alongside simplified ingredient formulations featuring recognisable, clean-label components across mass and grocery retail sets.
