Consumer packaged goods major General Mills has announced the return of its limited-edition Monsters Cereals range in partnership with The Jim Henson Company to mark the 55th anniversary of the seasonal breakfast portfolio.
The annual autumn rollout features updated packaging across the product line, incorporating puppet character designs developed by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. The campaign combines nostalgic CPG branding, interactive packaging design, and a channel-specific e-commerce release to capture seasonal Halloween demand across US retail networks.
Portfolio Variants
First introduced in 1971 with Count Chocula and Franken Berry, followed by Boo Berry in 1973, the seasonal breakfast range is a core component of General Mills' annual Q3 and Q4 CPG strategy.
For the 55th-anniversary campaign, the packaging features updated photography of the physical puppets created by The Jim Henson Company, alongside a cutout design allowing consumers to convert the cereal boxes into interactive hand puppets.
The limited-edition seasonal lineup includes three core variants:
🍫 Count Chocula: Chocolate-flavoured frosted cereal containing marshmallow pieces.
🫐 Boo Berry: Blueberry-flavoured frosted cereal containing marshmallow pieces.
🍓 Franken Berry: Strawberry-flavoured frosted cereal containing marshmallow pieces.
E-Commerce
Alongside standard retail distribution, General Mills is introducing a specialised direct-to-consumer (DTC) packaging innovation. On 1 October 2026, the manufacturer will launch an exclusive, limited-edition "fuzzy" Count Chocula cereal box on Walmart.com, priced at US$7.76. The packaging is manufactured with a textured outer layer engineered to replicate the fabric feel of the Jim Henson puppets.
The integration of channel-specific exclusivity and tactile packaging reflects broader CPG industry trends where brand owners leverage novelty packaging formats to drive e-commerce sales velocity and consumer engagement ahead of major seasonal trading periods.
Partnership
The collaboration builds on an initial structural partnership established between General Mills and The Jim Henson Company during the previous trading year.
Megan Brooks, Business Unit Director for Family Favourites Cereal at General Mills, stated that the multi-year collaboration with The Jim Henson Company was extended following positive consumer reception to the redesigned character puppets, allowing the brand to introduce updated packaging concepts to retail shelves for the anniversary milestone.
Nicole Goldman, Executive Vice President of Branding for The Jim Henson Company, noted that the 2026 campaign extends the creative scope of the partnership by incorporating interactive DIY puppet features into the physical box construction.
Retail Availability
The limited-edition Monsters Cereals lineup will commence nationwide distribution across US grocery, mass, and regional retail channels in late July 2026, with the DTC packaging variant debuting on Walmart.com in October.
