Danish food enterprise Eat Wasted has announced its commercial entry into the United States, bringing its upcycled pasta platform made from rescued artisanal European bread to North American consumer and retail channels.

Following an initial launch through experiential community dining events in New York City, the brand is scaling its commercial distribution footprint. Availability has commenced via direct-to-consumer digital channels and e-commerce platform Misfits Market, ahead of a planned rollout across physical Whole Foods Market locations later in the summer.

The release enters the fast-growing upcycled food sector, translating industrial food waste reduction strategies into high-margin, shelf-stable consumer packaged goods.

Upcycled Ingredients and Formulation

Founded in Copenhagen by Leif Friedmann and Jorge Aguilar, Eat Wasted was developed to address agricultural and post-bakery resource loss by converting unsold artisanal bread into dry pasta formats.

According to industry data, bread represents one of the highest-volume wasted food categories globally due to short ambient shelf-life parameters. Eat Wasted's manufacturing process integrates surplus European baked goods as a primary ingredient input, substituting standard raw durum wheat flour.

Key product specifications and technical metrics include:

🥖 Rescued Bread Base: Manufactured using surplus European artisanal bread, with each serving redirecting approximately one slice of bread from waste streams.

🍝 Textural Performance: Produced using traditional European extrusion techniques to create a textured, porous surface engineered for sauce adhesion.

📦 Sustainable Packaging: Formulated and shipped in 100 per cent recyclable paper-based packaging materials.

🤝 Social Impact Mechanics: Operates a one-for-ten donation structure, contributing one portion of pasta to community feeding initiatives for every ten units sold commercially.

Leif Friedmann, Co-Founder of Eat Wasted, stated that the business model was established to address daily bakery waste without compromising on functional cooking performance, texture, or quality standards expected by retail consumers.

Jorge Aguilar, Co-Founder of Eat Wasted, added that repositioning underutilised raw ingredients into scalable retail formats provides a commercial solution to broader food waste challenges across global supply chains.

Retail Distribution

Eat Wasted is deploying a phased multi-channel commercial distribution strategy to support brand awareness and volume growth across the United States.

The market entry encompasses three core distribution pillars:

  • Direct to Consumer (DTC): Global order fulfilment hosted directly through the brand's primary web platform at eatwasted.com.

  • E-Commerce Grocery: National e-commerce listing established via surplus grocery platform Misfits Market.

  • Physical Mass Retail: Physical retail store deployment scheduled across Whole Foods Market locations in late summer 2026.

By pairing direct-to-consumer digital touchpoints and experiential hospitality activations with mass-market organic grocery distribution, the manufacturer aims to secure immediate market presence within the sustainable and upcycled food categories.
