Costa Coffee, the UK’s largest coffee chain, has unveiled its Spring 2026 menu strategy, scheduled for a nationwide rollout on March 5, 2026. The update highlights a significant focus on beverage innovation through the introduction of Ube and Matcha variants, alongside a strategic expansion of its "on-the-go" tea services and retail instant coffee footprint.
Beverage Innovation: Leveraging Global Flavour Trends
A central pillar of the Spring launch is the introduction of Ube-based beverages—the Sweet Ube Hot Chocolate and Sweet Ube Frappe. By utilising the purple yam's nutty, vanilla-adjacent profile, Costa is targeting the increasing consumer demand for visually distinct and globally inspired flavours.
The brand is also doubling down on the "Matcha craze" with the addition of a Cherry Vanilla Iced Matcha Latte. This move aligns with broader industry data showing sustained growth in the functional and green tea latte segments, particularly among younger demographics seeking alternatives to traditional caffeine sources.
Multi-Channel Expansion and Retail Strategy
Beyond the in-store menu, Costa is implementing several infrastructure and retail upgrades to drive brand accessibility:
Express Machine Evolution: In a significant operational update, tea is now available at over 13,000 Costa Express machines nationwide. This move aims to capture a larger share of the "on-the-go" hot beverage market beyond traditional coffee.
Retail Penetration: Costa has launched its "Smooth Medium Blend Instant Coffee" in Iceland and Morrisons. This product, available in Smooth, Intense, and Decaf, is designed to replicate the "Mocha Italia" signature taste for the at-home consumption market.
Food Portfolio: Savoury-Sweet Hybrids and Seasonal Staples
The Spring food menu demonstrates a shift toward sophisticated flavour layering in the QSR (Quick Service Restaurant) space. The standout addition is the Bacon, Mature Cheddar and Chilli Jam Hot Cross Bun—a savoury-sweet hybrid designed to extend the utility of seasonal bakery items into the lunch and breakfast dayparts.
Other additions include:
Chicken Salad Sandwich: A fresh-category staple on malted bread to balance the heavier seasonal treats.
Bakery Innovation: The Strawberry & Matcha Cookie Sandwich further integrates the Matcha profile across categories, while traditional Easter SKUs like the Hot Cross Bun and Chocolate Cornflake Nest return to maintain seasonal volume.
Merchandise and Brand Loyalty
To support the beverage launch, Costa is introducing a collection of high-capacity tumblers and travel cups. The 34-oz "Matcha-inspired" tumblers are strategically designed to encourage the consumption of larger-format iced beverages, reflecting a shift in consumer habits toward high-volume, cold-brew, and iced tea products.
Nishant Bhatia, Global Food and Beverage Innovation Director at Costa Coffee, stated that the menu is designed to celebrate daily consumer rituals through fresh takes on seasonal favourites and high-flavour innovation.
The new range will be available across the UK and Ireland starting Thursday, March 5, 2026.
