Co-op (The Co-operative Group)

UK convenience retailer Co-op has extended its online grocery delivery operating hours to begin from 7:00 a.m. across more than 1,200 participating stores nationwide.

The schedule adjustment makes grocery orders available two hours earlier than the retailer's standard morning fulfilment window. Timed to coincide with the autumn back-to-school transition, the service expansion creates an estimated 750,000 additional early-morning delivery slots annually, providing doorstep drop-offs in 60 minutes or less.

The operational change addresses rapid-fulfilment morning demand, targeting emergency breakfast replenishment, forgotten lunchbox staples, and school preparation routines.

Targeted value mechanics across high-velocity breakfast and lunchbox categories supports the early-morning delivery push.

Co-op is aligning the service rollout with its Member Price structure, promotional 3-for-2 offers, and its ongoing Aldi Price Match scheme, focusing on ambient sandwich ingredients, fresh fruit, morning goods, and packaged snacks.

According to Co-op, its store-pick online fulfilment model currently provides digital grocery access to nearly 90% of the UK population, leveraging neighbourhood store density to fulfil on-demand orders directly within local communities.

Early Morning Delivery Slots

The service adjustment enables participating stores to pick and dispatch online grocery orders before the traditional morning school run and workday commute.

By moving opening delivery slots forward to 7:00 a.m., Co-op aims to capture urgent top-up shopping occasions that typically occur outside traditional supermarket delivery windows.

Key operational metrics and parameters of the rollout include:

Store Estate Participation: Deployed across more than 1,200 local Co-op convenience stores throughout the United Kingdom.

Slot Capacity: Generates approximately 750,000 incremental delivery slots per year.

Fulfilment Speed: Orders are picked directly from local store shelves and delivered to customer doorsteps in 60 minutes or less.

Operating Hours Shift: Commences online operations two hours earlier than the previous 9:00 a.m. delivery baseline.

Gary Kisby, Quick Commerce Trading Director at Co-op, stated that rapid online home delivery provides households with a practical solution to secure forgotten items within minutes, mitigating last-minute routine friction as families resume regular school and working schedules.

Partnerships and Reach

To maximise accessibility, Co-op is deploying the 7:00 a.m. delivery service simultaneously across its proprietary digital platform and external aggregator networks.

Consumers can place early-morning orders directly through Co-op's dedicated e-commerce portal, shop.coop.co.uk, alongside its third-party quick-commerce partner applications:

  • Deliveroo: Integrated into Co-op's established on-demand grocery partnership.

  • Just Eat: Operational across participating franchise and corporate convenience branches.

  • Uber Eats: Fulfilling early-morning grocery requests through local courier dispatch.

The multi-channel integration reflects ongoing quick-commerce developments across the UK grocery sector, where supermarket operators are extending operational service windows to increase basket frequency and maximise unit throughput from existing store assets.
