Beyond Meat, Inc. has announced that more than 20 products across its portfolio have earned the Clean Label Project Certification. This milestone makes Beyond Meat the first company in the plant-based meat category to receive this designation, which follows exhaustive third-party testing for environmental contaminants and harmful substances.
The certification covers a broad range of the company's core offerings, including the Beyond Burger®, Beyond Beef®, Beyond Steak®, and Beyond Chicken® Pieces. The announcement also marks the expansion of the certified portfolio to include the new Beyond Steak Filet and Beyond Ground Original.
Rigorous Purity Standards and Testing Protocols
The Clean Label Project is a national nonprofit focused on health and transparency in consumer products. Its certification process involves independent evaluation against strict health-based benchmarks that often exceed federal regulatory requirements.
Products are tested for a variety of substances, including:
Heavy Metals: Lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium.
Pesticides: Evaluating for residues from agricultural processes.
Plasticisers and Toxins: Ensuring the integrity of the manufacturing and packaging process.
Ethan Brown, Founder and CEO of Beyond Meat, emphasized that these third-party validations are critical to the company's mission. "Our commitment to clean and healthful ingredients defines us, and we are pleased to see this external recognition," Brown stated.
Expansion into Ready-to-Drink (RTD) Categories
In a significant move for the brand's diversification strategy, the Clean Label Project Certification also extends to the new Beyond Immerse protein drink line. Available in Peach Mango, Orange Tangerine, and Lemon Lime, these are the first ready-to-drink protein beverages to earn this recognition.
This expansion into the beverage sector with a "clean label" verified status allows Beyond Meat to compete in the functional beverage market with a distinct transparency advantage. By securing this certification for both its solid protein and liquid protein portfolios, the company is positioning itself as a leader in "purity-first" plant-based nutrition.
Strategic Impact on the Plant-Based Market
As the plant-based category faces increased scrutiny over ingredient lists and processing methods, Beyond Meat’s proactive pursuit of third-party certification serves as a strategic differentiator. The move addresses growing consumer demand for "cleaner" alternatives and provides a data-backed response to industry critics regarding the "ultra-processed" nature of meat substitutes.
Molly Hamilton, Executive Director of Clean Label Project, noted that the program is designed to recognise brands that take proactive steps to address contaminants. "These certifications underscore Beyond Meat’s commitment to accountability and exceeding the status quo," Hamilton said.
By setting a new benchmark for transparency, Beyond Meat aims to rebuild consumer trust and solidify its market position as the category continues to mature and prioritise ingredient integrity.
