Temperature-controlled logistics provider Vertical Cold Storage has expanded its regional operations with the acquisition of a refrigerated warehouse in Dothan, Alabama, from operator Dothan Warehouse.

The transaction represents the 13th facility in Vertical Cold Storage's national network and its second location in the Dothan region. Sponsored by real estate investment firm Platform Ventures, the logistics company intends to utilise the asset to deepen its commercial relationships with regional food producers, particularly in the peanut and poultry sectors.

The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.

Logistics Infrastructure and Regional Agricultural Impact

The acquired facility is situated in the heart of the primary peanut production region of the United States. Historically, the site has functioned as a key storage and logistics hub supporting regional peanut shelling and processing operations.

The technical specifications and transport connections of the refrigerated warehouse include:

  • 🌡️ Temperature Controls – Operating ranges spanning from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit (approximately 1 degree Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius), optimised for agricultural commodity storage.

  • 🛤️ Rail Infrastructure – Directly served by the CSX rail transport network to facilitate high-capacity inbound and outbound bulk shipping.

  • 🥜 Commodity Focus – Engineered to preserve the quality of raw and shelled peanuts, helping local growers stabilise supply chains.

  • 🚚 Logistics Synergy – Positioned to complement Vertical Cold Storage's existing Dothan freezer facility, which primarily provides blast freezing, storage, and export services to local poultry manufacturers.

By managing both frozen poultry logistics and refrigerated peanut storage in the same hub, the company aims to offer a more comprehensive cold chain service to the broader agricultural market in the southeastern United States.

Operational Synergy and Technological Integration

The transition of the warehouse follows a previous transaction between the two companies in August 2024, when Vertical Cold Storage purchased its nearby freezer facility from Dothan Warehouse.

Following the close of this latest asset deal, Vertical Cold Storage plans to transition the refrigerated facility onto its standardised proprietary technology platform. This integration includes deploying its core warehouse management system (WMS), alongside standard safety, compliance, and food-quality protocols.

According to Jim Henderson, Chief Commercial Officer of Vertical Cold Storage, the acquisition demonstrates the firm's ongoing commitment to supporting food producers in the region. He noted that integrating the site into the company's national network will allow customers to receive consistent operational and service standards.

Turner Jones, President of Dothan Warehouse, explained that the decision to transition the refrigerated warehouse to the same team will secure continuity of service for existing retail clients and create new operational opportunities for local employees, supporting the region's infrastructure as a growing food logistics hub.

Cold Chain Consolidation

The expansion highlights an ongoing consolidation trend within the North American cold chain and temperature-controlled logistics sectors.

As agricultural producers and food manufacturers face stricter regulatory requirements and rising transport costs, third-party logistics (3PL) providers are scaling up regional networks to offer consolidated distribution services.

First established with a focus on building a unified, national cold-storage platform, Vertical Cold Storage continues to acquire and integrate existing facilities alongside developing greenfield sites.

Backed by Platform Ventures, the firm's network now spans key agricultural and transport hubs across the United States, including Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Savannah, Miami, and Dothan, providing food and beverage processors with standardised logistics options.
