The latest food and beverage industry news and trend analysis

The UK Deposit Management Organisation (UK DMO), the not-for-profit body tasked with delivering the nation's Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), has officially unveiled its new trading name: Exchange for Change.

The rebrand marks a critical operational milestone as preparations accelerate for the scheme's implementation across England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, currently scheduled to go live in October 2027.

Visual Identity and Consumer Recognition

Alongside the name change, the organisation has debuted the official scheme icon. Developed in collaboration with Uncommon Creative Studio, the new visual identity depicts bottles and cans transforming into coins.

This iconography is designed to be instantly recognisable to consumers, appearing on all in-scope beverage containers and designated return points once the scheme is active. The branding aims to communicate the core transactional principle of the DRS: enabling consumers to reclaim their deposit upon returning empty vessels, thereby driving recycling rates and reducing litter.

Operational Guidance for Industry

As the scheme moves into its next phase, Exchange for Change has confirmed that supporting the supply chain—including producers, retailers, wholesalers, and hospitality operators—remains its central focus.

To facilitate compliance, the body will issue detailed technical guidance in the coming weeks. This documentation will cover:

  • Logo Application: Specific rules on placement, sizing, and colour use.

  • Packaging Updates: Timelines and formats to help businesses prepare artwork ahead of the 2027 deadline.

Russell Davies, Chief Executive of Exchange for Change, commented on the strategic intent behind the new identity:

“Our new name reflects what this scheme is all about, and that’s making a simple change that has the power to transform streets, communities and recycling habits across the UK.”

The organisation continues to work with stakeholders to finalise the operational and communications frameworks necessary to deliver the circular economy initiative.
