Austin-based QSR operator Tso Chinese Takeout & Delivery has partnered with autonomous delivery platform Autolane and delivery management system Nash to introduce autonomous food delivery in Austin, Texas.
The service utilises supervised Tesla Model Y vehicles to transport orders directly from restaurant kitchens to customer kerbsides. Operating through a unified checkout and dispatch infrastructure, the initiative provides automated vehicle dispatching without requiring restaurant replatforming or standalone customer applications.
Autonomous Delivery and Customer Experience
The autonomous delivery service initially launched on 7 July 2026 at Tso Chinese’s Cherrywood location in Austin. The operational process integrates directly into the restaurant's existing order flow:
🚗 Order Matching: When a customer places an order, the Nash software evaluates whether the delivery is suitable for an autonomous vehicle or requires a conventional human courier.
📱 Customer Opt-In: If matched with an autonomous route, the customer receives a text message offering the choice to receive their order via an autonomous vehicle.
📦 Supervised Loading: Upon customer opt-in, kitchen staff prepare the meal, and an on-site Autolane supervisor loads the order into the trunk of a supervised autonomous Tesla Model Y.
🔑 Kerbside Handoff: The customer receives real-time text updates tracking the vehicle's progress. Upon arrival, a secure tap-to-open link sent to the customer’s smartphone unlocks the trunk for order retrieval before the vehicle proceeds to its next delivery stop.
The system is designed to streamline logistics while removing mandatory gratuity fees for end consumers, lowering overall fulfilment costs for delivery-first restaurant models.
Technology Integration and Dispatch
The collaboration represents the first operational integration between Autolane and Nash. Autolane manages the physical fleet operations, including the autonomous vehicle network, on-ground supervision, loading logistics, and private-property arrivals. Nash handles the merchant-facing delivery decision engine, evaluating order parameters to dispatch either autonomous capacity or traditional third-party couriers.
Ben Seidl, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Autolane, stated that the live operational launch demonstrates the immediate commercial viability of supervised autonomous delivery on public roads, highlighting the role of integrated digital infrastructure in connecting vehicles to commercial operators.
Angell Tsang, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer at Tso Chinese Takeout & Delivery, noted that the restaurant concept was developed as a delivery-first model. Tsang explained that integrating autonomous delivery allows the business to maintain lower fulfillment costs, accelerate delivery speeds, and enhance operational reliability across its ordering network.
Mahmoud Ghulman, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Nash, highlighted that merchant adoption of autonomous logistics relies on seamless integration into existing workflows. Ghulman noted that the platform allows operators to dispatch autonomous vehicles as standard delivery capacity alongside conventional courier networks without technical complexity.
Fleet Expansion and Impact
Following the initial deployment at the Cherrywood location, Autolane and Nash plan to expand the autonomous delivery service across Tso Chinese’s four remaining locations in the Greater Austin area later in 2026.
The multi-company partnership reflects a growing trend in the food-service and retail sectors toward automated last-mile logistics, utilising a combination of autonomous passenger vehicles, sidewalk delivery robots, and aerial drones to address rising courier costs and urban last-mile bottlenecks.
