Starbucks UK has announced revisions to its Starbucks Rewards loyalty scheme, increasing the redemption thresholds required for free drinks, bakery items, and branded merchandise starting 3 September 2026.

The updates will require customers to spend up to 20 per cent more to unlock specific reward tiers, while the rate at which members accumulate loyalty stars will remain unchanged at 10 stars for every £1 spent.

The adjustments reflect broader operational trends across the UK quick-service restaurant and coffee sectors, where operators are recalibrating digital loyalty programs to maintain commercial margins in a changing cost environment.

Revised Tiers and Spending Requirements

Under the updated structure, the number of stars required across all four primary redemption tiers will increase, raising the equivalent cumulative spend needed to claim free products:

ā˜• Filter Coffee, Americanos, and Tea:Ā The threshold increases from 130 stars (Ā£13 spend) to 150 stars (Ā£15 spend).

🄐 Bakery and Food Items: The required total rises from 300 stars (£30 spend) to 350 stars (£35 spend), covering items such as croissants, cookies, and muffins.

🄤 Handcrafted Beverages: The threshold for handcrafted drinks, including lattes, mochas, matchas, and Frappuccinos, increases from 500 stars (£50 spend) to 600 stars (£60 spend).

ā˜• Branded Merchandise:Ā The top-tier redemption for selected merchandise, including reusable cups and mugs, increases from 1,000 stars (Ā£100 spend) to 1,150 stars (Ā£115 spend).

Program Mechanics

Starbucks confirmed that core earning mechanics, existing account balances, and higher-tier membership criteria will remain unaffected by the changes.

Key operational guidelines for the transition include:

  • Earning Rate:Ā Members will continue to accumulate 10 stars per Ā£1 spent across physical and digital ordering channels.

  • Existing Balances:Ā Unredeemed star balances accrued prior to 3 September 2026 will remain valid and convert to the new threshold structure automatically.

  • Gold Level Threshold:Ā The qualification tier for Gold Level status remains unchanged at 2,500 stars (Ā£250 spend), maintaining benefits such as free extra shots, selected syrups, and annual birthday beverages.

Industry Dynamics and Loyalty Trends

The realignment of the Starbucks Rewards program follows similar loyalty program modifications across the UK high-street coffee and food-to-go landscape over recent years.

As operational overheads and raw ingredient input costs remain key factors for retail operators, food and beverage brand owners are increasingly evaluating the financial structures of high-frequency discount and subscription models to balance customer retention with sustainable operating margins.
