A new consumer-facing brand, Skipper, has introduced an active food preservation accessory designed to address the inherent dryness of home refrigeration.
The product, termed Fridge Hydration, is engineered to resolve the issue of produce spoilage inside standard crisper drawers by maintaining optimal humidity levels, reportedly extending the freshness of fruit and vegetables by up to three times.
Developed by parent company Boveda Inc., the technology marks a shift from passive airflow management toward active moisture regulation in the domestic refrigeration space.
Cold Storage Dehumidification and Food Waste
Standard home refrigeration relies on cold, dry air to preserve food. While effective at controlling temperature, this dry environment actively dehumidifies fresh produce. Over time, moisture evaporates from the cells of fruits and vegetables, leading to accelerated wilting, structural decay, and nutrient loss.
According to data from the US Environmental Protection Agency, the average US household discards approximately $1,600 worth of fresh produce annually. This waste contributes to nearly $3,000 in total household food loss each year, a significant portion of which is driven by suboptimal storage environments.
While refrigerator manufacturers have historically attempted to address this via adjustable crisper vents and drawers, these features primarily manage passive airflow rather than actively regulating humidity.
Two-Way Humidity Control Technology
The newly launched device is designed to sit directly inside any standard crisper drawer, operating continuously to stabilise the storage atmosphere.
Rather than allowing moisture to evaporate unchecked, the insert dynamically regulates the microclimate inside the drawer. The product specifications include:
💧 Two-Way Moisture Regulation – Actively releases purified water vapour when the crisper drawer becomes too dry, and absorbs excess moisture when the environment becomes too humid.
⏱️ Extended Shelf Life – Formulated to preserve the cellular structure of fresh produce, helping fruits and vegetables remain crisp and fresh up to three times longer.
📅 Continuous Operation – Utilises self-regulating technology that operates automatically for up to three months before requiring replacement.
The product is built on Boveda’s established two-way moisture control technology, which has historically been utilised in other industrial and consumer packaging sectors to preserve moisture-sensitive goods.
Nutritional Impact of Moisture Loss
Beyond physical decay, moisture loss directly correlates with a reduction in the nutritional value of fresh food.
Scientific research indicates that key micronutrients, including vitamin C, folate, and general antioxidant compounds, begin to degrade as soon as cellular dehydration commences. This nutritional decline often occurs well before physical wilting or external spoilage becomes visible to consumers.
According to Sean Knutsen, Chief Executive Officer of Boveda Inc., standard domestic refrigerators have historically succeeded at managing temperature but have left a systemic gap in moisture control. He noted that the new insert aims to resolve this imbalance, allowing consumers to preserve both the texture and nutritional integrity of their groceries.
Retail Distribution and Pricing
Skipper is executing a multi-channel digital retail strategy to support the commercial rollout of the brand's debut product.
The Fridge Hydration insert is currently available for purchase online through Amazon, retailing at a price of $14.99.
Following this initial e-commerce rollout, the brand intends to expand its digital retail footprint with an upcoming launch on TikTok Shop, alongside immediate direct-to-consumer availability via its proprietary web platform.
