Shaw-Ross International Importers has announced the strategic acquisition of TYKU Sake from global spirits giant Diageo. The transaction, for which financial terms were not disclosed, further solidifies Shaw-Ross's position as a dominant importer of Japanese beverages in the United States.

The divestment by Diageo sees the TYKU brand change hands after a relatively brief tenure. The spirits conglomerate originally acquired the premium sake brand in 2020 as part of its broader acquisition of Davos Brands (which notably included Aviation American Gin).

Consolidating Japanese Imports

For Shaw-Ross, the acquisition is a targeted play to strengthen its already robust Japanese portfolio, allowing the importer to capture a larger share of the growing US consumer appetite for premium Asian spirits and culture.

TYKU, which was originally developed specifically for the US market in the early 2000s, will slot in alongside Shaw-Ross's existing heavyweight Japanese brands, which include Gekkeikan (sake) and Iichiko (shochu).

Scott Jove, President of Shaw-Ross, highlighted the strategic fit of the newly acquired asset: "As the nation’s leading importer of sake, we feel that TYKU complements our growing Japanese portfolio by increasing our range of premium sakes. From Gekkeikan to Iichiko, Shaw-Ross represents the top brands in the Japanese drinks categories, and we are well positioned to take advantage of the US consumer’s growing interest in the country’s culture and products."

The US Sake Category

The acquisition highlights a broader trend within the US beverage alcohol sector. While legacy conglomerates like Diageo frequently optimize their massive portfolios by spinning off niche or regional brands, specialized importers like Shaw-Ross are actively acquiring these assets to build deep, category-specific dominance.

By bringing TYKU under its umbrella, Shaw-Ross is leveraging its established distribution networks and category expertise to drive the brand's next phase of growth in a US market that is increasingly premiumizing its sake consumption.
