Proper No. Twelve® Irish Whiskey, managed by Proximo Spirits, has announced a strategic expansion of its portfolio with the launch of Proper No. Twelve Black Reserve™. Currently ranked as the third-largest Irish Whiskey brand in the United States, the brand is utilising this premium line extension to capture a broader demographic by bridging the flavour gap between traditional Irish smoothness and American bourbon complexity.
Launching ahead of the critical St. Patrick's Day trading period, the release is designed to drive trade-up within the brand franchise while recruiting bourbon enthusiasts through specific wood management techniques.
The 'Level 3 Char' Strategy
The core differentiator for Black Reserve is its maturation process. The liquid is a triple-distilled blend of single malt and grain whiskey, aged for a minimum of four years.
Crucially, the whiskey is matured in Level 3 heavily charred American Oak bourbon barrels. This high char level is a deliberate technical choice to open the wood grain, intensifying the interaction between the spirit and the oak.
First-Fill Barrels: Contribute bold bourbon notes of rich caramel, toasted wood, and soft vanilla.
Second-Fill Barrels: Add distinct distillery character alongside natural oak flavours of toffee and spice.
Craftsmanship and Approachability
Lander Otegui, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at Proximo Spirits, positioned the launch as a reinforcement of the brand's distilling credentials.
"We want Black Reserve to reinforce what Proper No. Twelve has been about from the start: expert craftsmanship, approachability and more than 400 years of whiskey production and blending expertise," Otegui stated. "The toasted wood and heartier caramel notes from the heavily charred barrels balanced by the gentle vanilla sweetness, is a great testament to that."
Market Positioning and Usage
By emphasising "toasted wood" and "bold bourbon flavours," Proper No. Twelve is positioning Black Reserve as a versatile spirit suitable for neat sipping or robust cocktail applications.
The brand is promoting a "Proper Black Honey Old Fashioned" as a signature serve, encouraging on-premise operators to utilise the whiskey in classic bourbon cocktails where the wood-derived sugars and vanilla notes can stand up to modifiers.
