Humane egg brand NestFresh has announced that its entire retail egg portfolio is now sourced exclusively through its Humanely Hatched programme.
The transition, completed several months ahead of the company’s original projected timeline, establishes NestFresh as the first national egg brand in the United States to fully scale in-ovo sexing technology across its complete retail product lineup.
The milestone follows the initial national launch of the Humanely Hatched line in 2024. Over the past year of commercial distribution, the brand has scaled the technology from a targeted speciality offering to the operational foundation of its entire U.S. supply chain, addressing a prominent animal welfare concern in the commercial poultry sector.
Technology and Supply Chain Scale
The central mechanism of the Humanely Hatched programme is the integration of "Cheggy" technology, an in-ovo sexing system developed by German agri-tech manufacturer Agri Advanced Technologies.
The non-invasive system utilises hyperspectral imaging and advanced algorithms to determine the sex of developing embryos during the incubation phase. Because male and female embryos of brown layer breeds exhibit distinct feather colourations, the system can identify and sort the eggs contact-free before hatching.
This process eliminates the requirement for the routine manual euthanising of male chicks, which do not lay eggs and are not utilised in broiler meat production.
The technology is highly suited to the premium and speciality egg sectors, which primarily rely on brown layer hens. Since introducing the system to its supplier hatcheries, NestFresh has spared more than 800,000 male chicks, demonstrating how automated biological sorting can improve supply chain integrity whilst matching high-volume commercial demands.
Certification and Operational Standards
To secure consumer trust and satisfy retailer requirements for third-party verification, the sourcing programme operates under strict independent oversight.
The primary operational and ethical metrics of the transition include:
🥚 SKU Sourcing Transition – Transitioning 100 per cent of NestFresh retail egg products to the Humanely Hatched protocol.
🐥 Embryo Sorting – Utilising non-invasive hyperspectral imaging to determine gender before hatching, eliminating chick culling.
🌾 Certified Humane Audit – Verifying the entire production process under the Certified Humane standards managed by Humane Farm Animal Care.
📸 Hatchery Integration – Applying high-capacity sorting systems to manage hatchery throughput without compromising egg or embryo quality.
By embedding these standards across its agricultural network, the company aims to establish a more transparent and sustainable production model for the wider egg industry.
Retail Distribution and Market Impact
According to Jasen Urena, Vice President of NestFresh, the rapid completion of the transition highlights the commercial viability of scalable humane technologies when supported by retail partners and consumer demand. He noted that the company intends to use this unified sourcing model to raise the baseline for ethical standards across the national food system.
To support the portfolio-wide transition, NestFresh has introduced updated carton packaging to help shoppers identify the ethically sourced products on supermarket shelves.
The brand's fully transitioned egg lines have secured broad retail placement, maintaining active distribution across major natural, speciality, and conventional grocery chains in the United States:
Whole Foods Market – Supporting premium organic and pasture-raised selections.
Publix – Providing high-volume regional coverage in the Southeast.
H-E-B – Securing strong shelf-space density across Texas markets.
National Grocery Networks – Distributing through Food Lion, Albertsons, Acme, Food Land, Harris Teeter, Heinen's, and Market Basket.
As retail operators face growing pressure to demonstrate supply chain transparency, the full-scale rollout of in-ovo sexed eggs provides commercial partners with a verified animal-welfare solution to satisfy evolving customer purchasing standards.
