McDonald’s Türkiye has announced the launch of its 'Drink & Drive' campaign, a strategic marketing initiative designed to capture the high-volume holiday travel segment. Developed by TBWA\Istanbul, the campaign utilises a bold linguistic twist on the universally recognised road-safety warning "Don't Drink and Drive," repurposing it to promote McCafé® coffee as a tool for maintaining alertness and focus behind the wheel.


The campaign integrates out-of-home (OOH), digital, and print channels, featuring a unique visual language that merges McDonald’s iconic branding with the physical architecture of Turkey’s most challenging driving routes.



Creative Strategy: Reinterpreting a Global Warning

The essence of the campaign lies in its willingness to play with a sensitive and highly recognisable safety message. By removing the "Don't" and focusing on the "Drink & Drive" phrasing in the context of coffee, McDonald's Türkiye is attempting to own the "attentiveness" narrative during periods of increased road travel.


Özdeş Dönen Artak, CMO of McDonald’s Türkiye, characterised the move as a creative reflection of real-life customer moments. "By reinterpreting the universally recognised 'Don't Drink and Drive' warning through a coffee-oriented perspective, we've introduced our own take: 'Drink & Drive,'" Artak stated. The goal is to position McCafé naturally into the driver's journey as a necessary "companion on the road."



Visual Identity: Transforming the Golden Arches

A significant technical aspect of the campaign is the deconstruction and reimagining of McDonald’s iconic visual assets. In the campaign's creative executions, the Golden Arches are transformed into bold, yellow road lines. This visual metaphor serves two purposes:


  1. Symbolic Focus: It represents the driver’s concentration on the road ahead.


  2. Brand Integration: It subtly weaves the McDonald's identity into the infrastructure of the journey itself, rather than just appearing as a destination.



Route Selection and Local Relevance

To drive local resonance and authenticity, TBWA\Istanbul selected some of Turkey's most notorious and challenging driving routes as the backdrop for the campaign’s visual narrative. These locations are culturally synonymous with "difficult journeys" for Turkish drivers:


  • Kuşyuvası Pass (Konya): A precarious 65-kilometre mountain stretch known for its sharp turns and steep inclines.


  • Mersin-Alanya Road: A gruelling 330-kilometre coastal route that requires high levels of driver stamina.


  • Bursa-Domaniç Road: A high-altitude route reaching 1,500 meters, often presenting challenging weather and visibility conditions.


By anchoring the campaign in these specific locations, McDonald's Türkiye is demonstrating an understanding of the local landscape and the genuine physical demands placed on drivers in the region.



Industrial Significance and Marketing

For B2B stakeholders and the broader marketing industry, the 'Drink & Drive' campaign highlights the power of "contextual subversion." In a crowded holiday advertising environment, brands that can successfully pivot a well-known social message into a brand-positive narrative often achieve higher recall and engagement metrics.
