La Vie

French plant-based meat maker La Vie has expanded beyond pork and bacon alternatives with the launch of its first chilled tofu portfolio across the UK.

Arriving in retail chillers this autumn, the three-SKU range introduces pre-flavoured, textured formats engineered to target weekday chicken meal occasions, ranging from evening snacking to stir-fries and centre-plate meal preparation. The launch marks the producer's initial diversification into natural plant protein blocks and breaded lines, tapping into consumer demand for versatile cooking bases with recognisable ingredient decks.

The product development directly targets standard poultry usage occasions in home cooking, positioning seasoned tofu cubes and breaded bites as direct functional swaps for diced chicken breast and processed chicken nuggets.

While traditional meat-alternative brands have historically relied on textured vegetable proteins, methylcellulose binders, and complex extrusion to replicate muscle fibres, tofu offers an established whole-food soybean base. However, broad consumer adoption has often been hindered by unfamiliarity with pressing, marinating, and seasoning techniques required to prepare raw blocks.

By presenting the protein in familiar convenience formats, such as breaded finger foods and pre-cut stir-fry cubes paired with portioned sauces, the range lowers preparation friction for flexitarian shoppers seeking savoury meat-free meals without culinary guesswork.

Flavoured Tofu Range

Departing from conventional unflavoured, water-packed blocks, La Vie has formulated each item with culinary marinades, beechwood smoking, or crumb coatings:

🍗 Tofu Nuggets: Beechwood-smoked natural tofu portions enrobed in an extra-crispy cornflake crumb coating seasoned with turmeric and paprika for elevated crunch, formulated for rapid air fryer preparation, oven baking, or pan frying.

🥢 Teriyaki Tofu Cubes: A 240g cooking kit comprising 200g of pre-diced smoked tofu pieces packaged alongside an individual 40g sachet of sweet and savoury teriyaki glaze, formulated for skillet and wok stir-fry dishes in under seven minutes.

🪵 Beechwood Smoked Tofu Block: A firm centre-plate tofu block naturally smoked over beechwood timber and seasoned with soy sauce, portioned into a two-pack (2 x 100g) format for slicing into salads, grain bowls, and hot pasta recipes.

Clean-Label and Ingredients

The collection is formulated around 100% non-GMO soya beans sourced directly from French agricultural cooperatives, maintaining the brand’s core European sourcing standards.

Across the range, the products avoid artificial additives and utilise traditional coagulation methods using nigari (magnesium chloride) to achieve structural density and moisture retention during domestic frying, baking, or air frying.

The reliance on whole soybean bases enables elevated micronutrient delivery, naturally providing complete dietary protein alongside iron and calcium. The nutritional architecture addresses heightened retail scrutiny regarding ultra-processed foods (UPFs) across the plant-based sector, offering supermarket buyers clean-deck alternatives that preserve high protein densities without relying on artificial thickeners or synthetic flavour enhancers.

Retail Availability and Distribution

Commercial rollout has commenced across major UK supermarket channels, with initial listings including Tesco supermarket stores and online grocery platforms.

The range is merchandised within chilled meat-free and plant-based aisles, supported by branded packaging incorporating collectable animal figurines alongside marketing campaigns highlighting weekday recipe applications.
