Ferrara Candy Company, a global leader in the sugar confectionery market, has announced plans to establish its first South Carolina operation. The 675 million dollar investment represents a transformative milestone for the 118-year-old company, aimed at radically increasing its manufacturing scale and supply chain efficiency to meet surging consumer demand for its iconic brand portfolio.

The new operation will be situated in Orangeburg County, providing Ferrara with a strategic East Coast hub to support its global distribution network, which currently spans over 60 countries.

Manufacturing Scale and Capability

The core of the investment is the construction of a 750,000-square-foot facility. This industrial complex is designed to be a fully integrated "centre of excellence" for the company, featuring:

  • Advanced Processing and Packaging: High-capacity lines for Ferrara's most popular brands, including Nerds, SweeTARTS, and Trolli.

  • Integrated Warehousing: Dedicated space for raw materials and packaging assets to streamline production workflows.

  • Administrative Infrastructure: On-site corporate and operational management offices to oversee the 1,000-person workforce.

Marco Capurso, CEO of Ferrara, characterised the facility as a "major step forward" in transforming the company’s manufacturing capability. By scaling up in the Midlands region, Ferrara is attempting to consolidate its position as a global leader in a category currently experiencing high levels of innovation and consumer interest.

Regional Economic Impact and Workforce Development

The project is projected to create 1,000 manufacturing and corporate jobs over the next 10 years. This influx of high-quality employment is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic prosperity in Orangeburg County and the broader Palmetto State.

The investment is supported by a comprehensive state-level incentive package, including:

  • Economic Development Bonds: The State Fiscal Accountability Authority authorised up to 85 million dollars in General Obligation State Economic Development Bonds to offset costs related to site acquisition, infrastructure, and improvements.

  • Job Development Credits: The Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved credits to support the company’s long-term hiring goals.

Governor Henry McMaster noted that the investment is a "powerful vote of confidence" in South Carolina’s industrial infrastructure and its ability to support large-scale, international manufacturing operations.

Consolidating Sugar Confectionery Leadership

Ferrara, a Ferrero-affiliated company, manages a portfolio of more than 40 iconic brands. The acquisition of Jelly Belly in recent years and the continued growth of Nerds, particularly the Gummy Clusters variant, have placed significant pressure on Ferrara's existing 30-facility global network.

The Orangeburg facility allows Ferrara to:

  1. Meet Peak Demand: Ensuring fill rates remain high during seasonal peaks for brands like Brach's.

  2. Optimise Logistics: Reducing lead times for East Coast retail and distribution partners.

  3. Future-Proof Supply Chains: Building a modern, resilient foundation that can adapt to evolving food safety and production standards.

As the sugar confectionery category continues to outperform broader snack growth—driven by the "permissible indulgence" and "flavour intensity" trends—Ferrara's massive investment signals a long-term commitment to high-volume domestic manufacturing.

Industry analysts expect that the Orangeburg site will become the "flagship" of Ferrara’s North American operations. The success of this 675 million dollar project will likely be measured by its ability to drive operational cost efficiencies while allowing the brand to rapidly prototype and launch new variants within its core 40-brand portfolio. For South Carolina, the arrival of a major Ferrero affiliate reinforces its reputation as a premier destination for global food and beverage manufacturing.
