French food-tech startup Edonia has secured €15 million in a new funding round to finance the industrial scale-up of its microalgae-derived protein ingredient, Edo.
The investment round was led by Swen Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, and EIT Food, alongside non-dilutive public financing from Bpifrance under the France 2030 national investment plan and commercial bank loans.
The capital will fund the industrialisation of Edonia's proprietary processing infrastructure, finance the opening of a dedicated production unit in France, and accelerate commercial rollout across European, Japanese, and US food manufacturing and foodservice markets.
"We firmly believe that microalgae can feed the world in a different way, and our successful step from pilot to large-scale production proves that there are applications far beyond nutraceuticals, particularly in the ready-to-use protein ingredients market," said Hugo Valentin, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Edonia.
"Edonia is developing the new category of nutritious, minimally processed whole foods plant-based proteins. These essential and versatile ingredients can be used by industrial manufacturers on a large scale and at competitive prices."
Edonization Technology and Environment
Edonia's ingredient platform centres on its patented "Edonization" technology, an industrial processing method developed in partnership with French agroscience institute AgroParisTech.
The mechanical and thermal process transforms raw spirulina microalgae into a tender, texturised protein grain without the addition of chemical binders, artificial flavourings, or synthetic texturisers. Unlike conventional plant-protein isolates that require heavy chemical solvent extraction and downstream fractionation, Edonia positions its ingredient as a minimally processed whole-food protein.
According to data verified by EIT Food, the functional ingredient's carbon footprint is up to 27 times lower than traditional animal meat benchmarks. The resulting grains deliver high protein density, iron, and micronutrient profiles while circumventing the bitter organoleptic and seaweed-like flavour defects historically associated with raw algae inputs.
"This investment demonstrates not only the strength of Edonia's technology, but also the growing market demand for innovative protein solutions that combine nutrition, affordability and sustainability," said Benoît Lelong, Senior Investment Manager at EIT Food.
Industrial Scale-Up and Shared Production Architecture
Edonia will allocate the funding package to transition from pilot volumes to continuous commercial manufacturing.
The business plans to open a dedicated industrial production facility established through an operational partnership within an existing, shared manufacturing site in France. Utilising shared industrial infrastructure enables the company to reduce capital expenditure deployment times, utilise existing utilities, and scale volume output ahead of retail production timelines.
Founded by Hugo Valentin (CEO), Pierre Mignon (COO), and Nicolas Irlinger (CTO), the company has established early commercial momentum ahead of its facility commissioning:
Commercial Pre-Orders: More than €30 million in commercial pre-orders secured across global markets.
Industry Contracts: Roughly 20 commercial offtake agreements signed with food industry partners and foodservice operators.
Target Markets: Expanding B2B commercial distribution across Europe, Japan, and the United States.
Multifunctional Formulations
The high-protein ingredient is engineered as a versatile formulation block across multiple food manufacturing categories.
Rather than exclusively mimicking animal mince, Edo is designed for dual application across both meat-alternative formats and general nutritional fortification:
🥩 Direct Meat and Seafood Alternatives: Deployed as a whole-food protein grain in patties, bolognese-style preparations, tacos, and seafood fillings, providing bite and moisture retention without allergen declarations.
🧀 Dairy and Alternative Matrices: Integrated into fermented and analogue cheese preparations to provide structured plant-derived solid content.
🥣 Everyday Nutritional Fortification: Added to ambient and chilled ready meals, bakery products, and prepared grain dishes to elevate dietary protein and mineral content while maintaining a clean-label deck.
The industrial deployment aims to resolve persistent cost and texture barriers in the alternative protein supply chain, providing commercial food manufacturers with a stable, European-grown protein source that aligns with rising regulatory and consumer focus on minimally processed ingredients.
