PepsiCo Foods U.S. has introduced Doritos Lemon Pepper, a limited-time product addition translating the popular culinary seasoning blend into the centre-store tortilla chip fixture.
Previewed to commercial grocery and convenience retailers at the 2026 NACS Show in Las Vegas, the limited-time offering (LTO) will roll out across retail accounts nationwide in early 2027. The launch pairs the brand's corn tortilla chip base with a layered seasoning architecture combining citrus brightness, black pepper heat, and savoury notes.
The release marks the brand's latest move to commercialise regional restaurant and foodservice flavour trends, bringing an established profile from specialised wing dining into high-volume packaged snacks.
"Lemon pepper has become a fan favourite, born out of Atlanta's wing scene and loved for its bold, tangy kick. We've watched it take off, and it felt like a natural fit for Doritos," said Jess Spaulding, Senior Vice President of Marketing at PepsiCo Foods U.S.
"Getting lemon pepper right on a chip is harder than it sounds. You want the bright citrus up front and the pepper to build as you eat. When our retail partners got an early taste at the NACS Show, the reaction was immediate. Doritos Lemon Pepper takes its inspiration from that wing-shop favourite and makes it bold in a way only Doritos can."
Flavour Profile and Seasoning Architecture
The product formulation is engineered to deliver a progressive sensory experience across the palate, balancing high acidity against lingering heat:
🍋 Doritos Lemon Pepper: Opens with an upfront burst of tangy citrus flavour, transitioning into building black pepper warmth and savoury umami seasoning, finished with a lingering zest.
Developing lemon pepper for ambient snack applications presents technical formulation hurdles, particularly ensuring that volatile citrus notes do not dissipate during shelf storage or overpower the savoury baseline of the toasted corn substrate. By layering the top citrus notes over a grounded pepper profile, the seasoning system mirrors the culinary balance found in freshly dressed wing preparations.
Foodservice Inspiration in Packaged Snacking
The introduction of lemon pepper highlights how fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) brand owners continue to look to regional food culture and foodservice menus to inspire packaged grocery innovations.
Originally popularised through quick-service wing spots in the southeastern United States, particularly Atlanta, lemon pepper has expanded beyond local dining into mainstream American food culture. By adapting the flavour profile into an ambient snack format, Doritos leverages established consumer familiarity with the seasoning to lower trial barriers in the savoury snacks aisle.
The use of limited-duration launches also serves as an operational tool to stimulate category growth, giving retail stockists high-turnover seasonal items that encourage impulse conversion among younger snacking demographics.
Retail Availability and Phased Launch
Commercial distribution for Doritos Lemon Pepper will commence nationwide across conventional grocery multiples, mass merchandisers, and convenience store networks in early 2027.
The limited-time offering will be supported across standard multi-outlet grocery channels and front-of-store convenience displays, providing retailers with an incremental trade-up option within the corn tortilla chip fixture during the early 2027 trading window.
