Cargill has inaugurated a new fertiliser manufacturing and blending plant at its operating site in Nueva Palmira, Uruguay.

The capital investment expands Cargill’s agricultural infrastructure in South America, engineered to address evolving production demands across Uruguayan farming systems. Built around advanced blending technology, upgraded safety frameworks, and faster dispatch logistics, the facility is designed to deliver tailored plant nutrition solutions and improve resource efficiency for domestic crop growers.

The plant opening highlights Cargill's ongoing strategy to expand input distribution and technical services across key agricultural export corridors in the Southern Cone.

Objectives and Blending Capabilities

The development of the Nueva Palmira facility was structured around three core operational priorities: elevating workplace safety, expanding handling capacity to support sector growth, and improving input quality standards.

The upgraded site integrates modernised infrastructure and process technologies to enhance plant nutrition delivery:

🌱 Precision Blending Architecture: Incorporates advanced mixing equipment to develop customised fertiliser blends tailored to soil profiles and crop requirements.

🔬 Micronutrient Integration: Expands the availability of specialised plant nutrition formulations, including micronutrients and crop-specific input technologies.

Accelerated Preparation and Dispatch: Optimises material handling workflows to reduce truck turnaround times and respond to compressed seasonal field-application windows.

🛡️ Upgraded Process Safety: Embeds infrastructure improvements engineered to reinforce operational reliability and safety standards across daily handling routines.

Gabriel Di Giovannantonio, President of Cargill Uruguay, stated that the investment forms part of the enterprise's long-term commitment to Uruguayan growers, noting that the objective centres on supporting agricultural modernisation through efficient, custom-calibrated input solutions that allow farmers to raise yields while managing resources responsibly.

Precision Agriculture and Technical Formulation

The facility commissioning arrives as South American agricultural systems increasingly shift from broad-spectrum bulk fertilisation toward targeted crop nutrition programmes.

Felipe González, Crop Inputs Product Line Manager at Cargill Uruguay, explained that modern agricultural systems require higher precision and efficiency, adding that the new plant provides the technical capacity and mixing accuracy required to help producers optimise resource expenditure and maximise crop productivity.

To commemorate the commissioning, Cargill hosted an industry briefing and facility walkthrough for regional agricultural producers and commercial clients.

The event featured an analysis of international fertiliser market dynamics delivered by Zacarías Ruiz Moreno, Director of Fertilisers for Cargill Ag & Trading Latam, alongside a technical presentation on crop protectors and micronutrient efficacy presented by Agronomical Engineer Federico Pieroni of ProNutrition.

Regional Agricultural Footprint

Situated on the Uruguay River, Nueva Palmira serves as a vital logistics and port gateway for Uruguayan grain and oilseed exports as well as regional barge transit across the Mercosur agricultural basin.

By co-locating specialised fertiliser blending and dispatch capabilities alongside its established grain origination and river logistics infrastructure, Cargill strengthens its vertically integrated supply network in Uruguay. The new asset equips the enterprise to provide domestic growers with an integrated operational loop, linking upstream soil nutrition and agronomic inputs with downstream crop purchasing and global export trading.
