Speciality ingredients distributor Barentz has opened a new commercial office and dedicated Human Nutrition application laboratory in Shanghai, China.
The new facility expands the Dutch group’s regional technical infrastructure, providing local food and beverage manufacturers with tailored formulation support, ingredient testing, and rapid prototyping services.
The investment forms part of Barentz’s broader international growth strategy to combine local market technical delivery with its global sourcing and ingredient distribution network across the Asia-Pacific region.
Application Focus and Technical Capabilities
The Shanghai laboratory will concentrate initially on bakery and savoury applications, supporting food processors with recipe development, ingredient replacement, and texture optimisation:
Bakery Formulations: Technical support for baked goods, dough systems, functional fillings, and shelf-life extension.
Savoury Solutions: Recipe development, seasoning integration, and flavour stabilisation across prepared foods and savoury bases.
The Shanghai facility is integrated into Barentz’s global Human Nutrition technical network, which maintains dedicated application centres across Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific.
Across its wider operations, the company provides technical application support spanning beverages, dairy, specialised nutrition, meat and fish, and plant-based protein alternatives.
Regional and Market Collaboration
The establishment of the Shanghai technical centre is designed to accelerate customer product development cycles by providing on-the-ground technical resources.
By conducting pilot trials and application testing in-market, Barentz aims to help domestic and international manufacturers navigate shifting local consumer preferences and ingredient regulations. The facility allows food scientists and product developers to collaborate directly on reformulations, texture challenges, and nutritional enhancements.
The opening builds on Barentz's established presence in China, where the group operates commercial distribution through Barentz (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd. alongside pharmaceutical and life sciences distribution hubs, supported by a network of regional warehousing facilities.
The Shanghai laboratory is now operational and will support customer innovation projects and technical evaluations across the Chinese food and beverage manufacturing sector.
