Aldi US has entered the fresh prepared foods sector with the introduction of its first collection of ready-made chilled meals.

Rolling out to selected regional stores in early October ahead of a full nationwide deployment by January 2027, the collection introduces seven fresh, ready-to-heat options spanning single-serve and family-sized formats. The line enters the market with single-serve portions priced under $8 and family-style trays under $15.

The launch targets rising consumer reliance on convenient meal solutions, supported by market research indicating that 61% of American shoppers cite convenience as a primary purchase consideration. By positioning fresh, chef-curated recipes at discount price points, the retailer aims to address grocery price sensitivity in the ready-to-heat aisle without compromising ingredient quality.

"Our shoppers are looking for meals that fit into busy lives without sacrificing quality or stretching their budgets," said Joan Kavanaugh, Vice President of National Buying at Aldi US.

"That's why we were thoughtful about how we entered this category. We're evolving to meet our shoppers where they are by delivering fresh ingredients, great flavour and unbeatable value that they can always expect from Aldi."

Product Range

Formulated as fresh, refrigerated meal trays rather than frozen items, the range comprises five single-serve meals and two multi-portion family dishes:

Single-Serve Options

🍝 Beef Bolognese Spaghetti: Classic pasta topped with a slow-simmered minced beef Bolognese sauce and cheese.

🧀 Beef Brisket with White Mac & Cheese: Smoked beef brisket paired with cavatappi pasta in a white cheese sauce.

🍛 Butter Chicken & Rice: Seasoned chicken breast in an aromatic spiced tomato butter sauce served alongside white rice.

🌯 Chicken Burrito Bowl: Marinated chicken pieces combined with black beans, corn, rice, and Mexican-inspired seasonings.

🍗 Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo: Sliced chicken breast layered over fettuccine pasta in a creamy garlic and parmesan sauce.

Family-Size Options

🧀 Chicken and Bacon Mac n' Cheese: Multi-serve pasta tray combining diced chicken, smoky bacon lardons, and rich cheese sauce.

🍕 Meat Lovers Pizza Bake: Pasta bake incorporating seasoned sausage, pepperoni, beef, tomato marinara, and melted mozzarella.

Formulation and Nutrition

The ready-made collection was developed in partnership with supplier Kitchen Food Company, undergoing an extensive kitchen trial process to establish shelf-life stability and texture retention during domestic microwave or oven reheating.

"We tested hundreds of recipes as we developed this collection, with quality as our top standard from the very beginning," explained Terry Jackson, Head of Food at Kitchen Food Company. "We want every meal to hit the mark on bold flavour and stand out ingredients, so even when time is short, shoppers can still look forward to what's on the table."

Beyond convenience, the collection focuses on elevated macronutrient content. The single-serve SKUs supply between 30 and 46 grams of protein per serving, while the family-size trays provide 16 to 22 grams of protein per portion. The recipes utilise real cheeses, scratch-made sauces, and whole-muscle chicken breast and smoked brisket without relying on non-dairy fillers or frozen components.

In-Store Rollout Schedule

Aldi is positioning the new category within dedicated refrigerated fixtures located near primary store entrances to drive daytime grab-and-go lunch traffic and evening dinner planning.

The initial rollout will debut across select metropolitan areas in early October, with phased distribution expanding across regional store networks through autumn 2026. The full portfolio will achieve nationwide availability across the retailer's US estate by January 2027.

To maintain shopper engagement and category rotation, Aldi will introduce limited-time seasonal meals under its 'Aldi Finds' rotational programme every month throughout the coming year.
