- Kellogg's Closes 88-Year-Old Manchester Cereal Plant | FNBX
Kellanova has ceased production at its historic Trafford Park cereal facility after 88 years, resulting in 360 job losses as manufacturing shifts to Wrexham. comments debug Exchange Write a comment Write a comment Share Your Thoughts Be the first to write a comment. Featured in this news Food Kellanova The Newsroom Cereal manufacturer Kellanova, the global snacking and cereal business formerly known as Kellogg Company, has officially ceased manufacturing operations at its Trafford Park factory in Greater Manchester. The closure brings an end to 88 years of cereal processing at the 27-acre facility, resulting in the loss of approximately 360 manufacturing roles. Built in 1938 as Kellogg's first production plant in Great Britain, the facility historically functioned as one of the largest cereal manufacturing sites in Europe, processing flagship brands including Corn Flakes, Rice Krispies, and Coco Pops. Following the end of active processing and packing lines this week, commercial production volume is being relocated to Kellanova's manufacturing facility in Wrexham, North Wales. The site itself will formally remain open for decommissioning activities through the end of 2026. Structural Inefficiencies and Pressures The operational wind-down follows a formal closure proposal initiated by parent enterprise Kellanova in early 2024, which concluded that modernising the legacy industrial facility was financially unviable. Key operational factors and architectural constraints behind the site closure include: 🏭 Legacy Multi-Storey Architecture: Constructed in 1938, the factory was designed across a six-storey vertical layout, requiring raw materials and finished cereal to travel up and down multiple floors during processing rather than along modern, single-level automated lines. 📉 Excess Redundant Footprint: Despite its 27-acre physical footprint, Kellanova utilised only approximately half of the building's floor space, creating structural overheads and operating cost drag. ⚙️ Capital Reallocation Hurdle: Engineering audits indicated that the capital investment required to refurbish the ageing processing lines and comply with modern manufacturing standards exceeded the commercial value of continued operations. 🚚 Network Consolidation: Shifting production volume into the existing Wrexham facility enables Kellanova to consolidate UK cereal manufacturing within a modernised, high-throughput operating environment. Chris Silcock, UK Managing Director at Kellanova, previously stated that the decision was driven by structural site realities rather than workforce performance, noting that the plant's 1930s vertical layout and unutilised space made future capital investment unsustainable. Workforce Impact and Redundancy Agreements The closure impacts 360 plant personnel across processing, packing, maintenance, and logistics operations in Greater Manchester. Following collective consultations between management, employee representatives, and trade unions, including the Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers (USDAW)—the parties established a mitigation package: Enhanced Redundancy Terms: An agreed compensation package reflecting employees' long service at the manufacturing plant. Outplacement and Training: Partnerships with local employment agencies and training providers to assist staff with career transitions. Regional Redeployment: Select relocation opportunities to other Kellanova operations, including the Wrexham plant and corporate hubs, where capacity permits. Mick Murray, Area Organiser for USDAW, stated that trade unions worked through the collective consultation framework to secure substantial compensation agreements to assist employees transitioning out of the business. A Kellanova spokesperson thanked all former and current factory colleagues, local suppliers, and community partners, confirming that manufacturing operations have formally concluded ahead of final site decommissioning. Retained Footprint across Greater Manchester and the UK While cereal production departs Trafford Park, Kellanova confirmed that Greater Manchester will remain central to its UK corporate and administrative operations. The group's operational footprint across the United Kingdom continues across several core sites: 🏢 Salford MediaCity: Functions as Kellanova's UK commercial headquarters and technological innovation hub for Europe, employing roughly 520 personnel. 🥣 Wrexham Production Hub: Operates as the company's primary UK cereal and portable foods manufacturing centre, absorbing Manchester's former production volume. 📦 St Helens Distribution Centre: Manages national warehousing, logistics, and supply chain fulfilment for UK retail partners. The release of the 27-acre Trafford Park site represents a prime industrial real estate opportunity in one of the UK's most established logistics corridors, with local authorities and developers evaluating the land for modern supply chain and industrial redevelopment.
