Welch's has expanded its product footprint into the freezer aisle with the launch of its new Real PB&Js range. Rolling out initially at select Walmart stores nationwide, the new product line features frozen, individually wrapped peanut butter and jelly sandwiches designed to address consumer demand for larger portion sizes and higher protein content.
The launch represents a strategic extension of Welch's established brand equity in fruit spreads into the convenient frozen food sector.
Product Specifications and Flavours
The individually wrapped sandwiches are sold in six-count boxes and are manufactured using fresh-baked bread, creamy peanut butter, and fruit spreads. Formulated without high fructose corn syrup or artificial colours, each sandwich provides a good source of dietary fibre and contains 12 grams of protein.
The product is 50% bigger than the leading national brand's 2oz sandwich, targeting young adult consumers seeking higher-satiety, convenient food options.
The range debuts with three flavour varieties:
🍇 Concord Grape Jelly: A classic pairing featuring the brand's signature grape spread.
🍓 Strawberry Jam: A traditional sweet strawberry formulation.
🍎 Mixed Fruit: An entirely new flavour profile inspired by the brand's retail fruit snacks.
Availability and Retail
The product development was informed by consumer research indicating that standard frozen peanut butter and jelly portions in the retail channel did not fully satisfy the appetite requirements of young adults. By increasing both the physical size of the sandwich and its nutritional density, the brand aims to establish a premium position in the convenient frozen snack category.
Andrew Hartshorn, Chief Brand and Innovation Officer at Welch's, noted that consumer feedback pointed directly to a demand for larger portion sizes. Hartshorn stated that the development of the larger sandwiches was intended to satisfy these appetites using real ingredients, while maintaining the brand's established taste profile.
The Real PB&Js line is currently available at selected Walmart stores across the United States at a retail price of $8.87 per box. Welch's has confirmed plans to expand the distribution of the range to additional retail partners in 2027.
