US natural cheese producer Sargento Foods has announced a definitive agreement to acquire California-based food business La Terra Fina, a manufacturer of premium dairy-based dips, spreads, and quiches.

The transaction marks Sargento's initial expansion into the perimeter deli department of grocery retailers nationwide, extending the family-owned business beyond its core natural cheese portfolio into prepared dips and mealtime categories.

The acquisition is targeted to be finalised in late September 2026. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, as both enterprises operate as privately held businesses.

Retail Footprint

The addition of La Terra Fina allows Wisconsin-headquartered Sargento to broaden its presence across multiple eating occasions within physical grocery channels.

By integrating La Terra Fina's product range, Sargento gains immediate access to refrigerated deli cases, complementing its established footprint in the refrigerated dairy aisle.

Key commercial parameters of the deal include:

🧀 Deli Department Placement: Entry into the retail perimeter deli segment across US supermarket networks.

đŸ„Ł Portfolio Diversification: Addition of premium chilled dairy dips, speciality spreads, and refrigerated quiches.

🏭 Manufacturing Infrastructure: Incorporation of La Terra Fina's operating hub and production facility in Union City, California.

đŸ‘„ Workforce Integration: Transition of approximately 250 La Terra Fina employees into the broader Sargento business.

Louie Gentine, third-generation Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sargento, stated that the acquisition aligns with the company's focus on adding value through high-quality food offerings, providing a platform to scale the La Terra Fina brand alongside Sargento's established enterprise legacy.

Management and Background

La Terra Fina was founded in 1983 in Union City, California, and has operated as a private affiliate of investment firm Catamount Management Corporation since 2015.

Stephen Cottrell, President and Chief Executive Officer of La Terra Fina, noted that joining Sargento positions the brand for accelerated growth while maintaining operational alignment between two long-term-oriented business cultures.

The transaction represents a major portfolio addition for Sargento, which was established in 1953 and remains one of the largest independent natural cheese manufacturers in the United States.

Upon closing in late September 2026, Sargento plans to support La Terra Fina's product pipeline and commercial distribution across nationwide retail stockists.
