Living Things, a UK-based functional soft drinks brand, has announced the expansion of its portfolio with the launch of "Cherry & Lime." This lightly sparkling prebiotic soda is strategically designed to capitalise on the rising consumer demand for "permissible indulgence", beverages that offer nostalgic flavour profiles without the high sugar and calorie counts associated with traditional carbonated soft drinks.

The launch arrives as the functional beverage market continues to evolve, with retailers increasingly seeking products that combine proven health benefits, such as gut health support, with seasonal flavour relevance.

Flavour Pairing and Retail Relevance

The selection of Cherry & Lime was a deliberate move to balance familiar, nostalgic notes with refreshing summer acidity. Ben Vear, co-founder and CEO of Living Things, noted that the flavour was developed to be "timely, exciting, and relevant for retailers" during the peak summer season.

By pairing the "nostalgic, familiar" taste of cherry with the "fresh, balanced" profile of lime, the brand is attempting to lower the barrier to entry for the functional category. The strategy assumes that flavour remains the primary driver of initial purchase, while the functional attributes drive repeat loyalty among health-conscious demographics.

Technical Specifications and Nutritional Integrity

Living Things continues to prioritise a "clean label" approach, ensuring the new variant remains compliant with the standards of the wider range. Key technical and nutritional attributes include:

  • Microbial Load: Contains 2 billion live cultures per can to support gut microbiome health.

  • Fibre and Sugar: Formulated as a high-fibre, low-sugar beverage with no added sweeteners.

  • Caloric Density: Features fewer than 15 calories per 100ml.

  • All-Natural Formulation: Utilises only natural flavours to align with the "clean-label" demand of premium health-conscious shoppers.

Retail Roadmap and Multi-Channel Distribution

The launch is being supported by an aggressive multi-channel distribution strategy, targeting both the convenience and high-end speciality retail sectors. While initially available via the brand’s direct-to-consumer (DTC) site and Amazon, a broader rollout is scheduled for the coming weeks.

Planned retail partners include:

  • Premium Retail: Harrods and Whole Foods Market.

  • Travel and High-Street Convenience: WHSmith and Coco di Mama.

  • Independent Channels: Local health and speciality food stores.

The product is available in 330ml individual cans with a recommended retail price (RRP) of 2.29 pounds. To cater to both immediate consumption and "pantry loading" behaviours, the brand is also offering 4-pack and 12-pack multipack configurations.

The Evolution of Functional Soft Drinks

The functional soft drinks category is moving beyond niche health food stores into mainstream retail environments. As consumers increasingly substitute traditional sodas for prebiotic and probiotic alternatives, brands like Living Things are focusing on "sensory performance" as a competitive differentiator.

For retailers, the introduction of a high-fibre, low-calorie seasonal variant like Cherry & Lime provides an opportunity to drive incremental value in the chilled drinks cabinet. The combination of a 2.29-pound price point and a clear functional value proposition allows retailers to trade up existing soft drink shoppers who are transitioning toward healthier lifestyles.

As Living Things continues to scale its presence, the industry anticipates further flavour-led innovations that utilise "timely" seasonal windows to capture market share from traditional, sugar-heavy beverage incumbents.
