Craft spirits producer Hard Truth Distilling Co. has announced the release of its third 2026 Master Distiller's Reserve expression: Dark Roast Rye.

The new whiskey blends two of the distillery’s proprietary mash bills, Chocolate Malt Rye and Caramel Malt Rye, to bring roasted malt profiles from the brewing world into the craft American rye category.

Scheduled as the featured spirit for Hard Truth's Harvest Festival on 26 September 2026, the 100-proof release targets rising consumer demand for complex wood and malt expressions across direct-to-consumer and off-premise trade channels.

Roasted Malt Formulation

The development of Dark Roast Rye originated in 2018 when Hard Truth’s distilling team began experimenting with prescriptive grain roasting techniques used in craft brewing.

By combining two distinct 25-barrel batches in equal proportions, the expression highlights the sensory impact of roasted barley alongside traditional rye spices:

🥃 50/50 Mash Bill Blend: Formulated using equal parts of the enterprise's RW-3 mash bill (51% rye, 38% corn, 11% chocolate malted barley) and RW-4 mash bill (51% rye, 38% corn, 11% caramel malted barley).

📜 Bottled-in-Bond Compliance: Distilled within a single distilling season at one location, aged for at least four years, and bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV) under statutory US federal supervision.

Bryan Smith, Master Distiller at Hard Truth, stated that precision grain roasting provides nuanced, dark dessert and coffee flavour profiles without requiring secondary cask finishing or artificial additives.

Chris Moore, Barrel Manager at Hard Truth, added that the equal integration of caramel and chocolate malted barleys elevates the grain matrix as the primary flavour driver in the finished spirit.

Availability

To build trade engagement and consumer velocity ahead of the official harvest release, Hard Truth is hosting two regional preview events:

  • Cask & Still Social: Hosted at the distillery’s flagship venue in Nashville, Indiana, on 21 August 2026, featuring cocktail pairings and live jazz performances.

  • Whiskey Social: Held at the Garage at Bottleworks in Indianapolis on 28 August 2026, offering small-plate culinary pairings and tasting stations.

The Master Distiller's Reserve Dark Roast Rye carries a suggested retail price (MSRP) of US$59.99 per bottle.

Limited quantities will be allocated for purchase during the August preview events ahead of the primary Harvest Festival release on 26 September 2026.
