Global agricultural processing major ADM has announced a series of infrastructure investments designed to expand its oilseed crush capacity across North America. The targeted enhancement programme will unlock approximately 700,000 metric tonnes of additional annual crush capacity, representing more than 25 million bushels of incremental crop demand for agricultural producers.
The investments focus on upgrading existing operational infrastructure across four primary processing plants in the United States, allowing the business to increase throughput and optimise supply chain efficiency without building entire greenfield facilities.
The expansion is driven by sustained market demand for vegetable oil and feedstocks, supported by domestic US biofuel policies and expanded international trade requirements.
Targeted Facility Upgrades and Timelines
ADM is directing capital investments into individualised enhancement plans across four key US production sites, focusing on debottlenecking, storage expansion, and equipment modernisation.
The strategic facility upgrades encompass:
🏠Frankfort, Indiana: Upgrades focus on storage expansion, process optimisation, and equipment enhancements, with completion targeted for late 2028.
⚙️ Deerfield, Missouri: Capital works will unlock throughput capacity across conveying, flaking, extraction, and utility systems, scheduled for completion in late 2028 or early 2029.
🌾 Lincoln, Nebraska: Project scope includes meal storage enhancements and debottlenecking interventions to remove operational restraints, with completion projected for late 2028.
🌱 Spiritwood, North Dakota: Executed through the Green Bison joint venture with Marathon Petroleum Corporation, the facility will undergo operational optimisation and select equipment upgrades, targeted for completion in mid-2028.
Gary McGuigan, President of ADM's North America Ag Services and Oilseeds business, stated that expanding capacity within the established operating footprint preserves capital flexibility while delivering a substantial increase in processing volume across the company's regional network.
Biofuel Demand and Agribusiness
The multi-year processing expansion aligns with structural growth across the global renewable fuels sector, where plant-based oils serve as essential feedstocks for hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and renewable diesel production.
By building throughput capacity at existing regional hubs, ADM aims to strengthen connection points between local farming communities and domestic energy markets.
The initiative follows recent infrastructure investments across ADM's US processing network, including facility modernisations at Clinton, Iowa, and grain elevator expansions at Optima, Oklahoma. ADM confirmed that it is actively evaluating additional North American crush locations for future capital allocations.
