New consumer research from the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA) reveals that while air fryers are now present in 70% of American households, a substantial packaging and preparation gap persists across the food manufacturing sector.
According to the study, nine in ten air fryer owners express a desire to broaden how they use the appliance. However, despite rapid kitchen adoption, only about one-third of commercial frozen and refrigerated food products currently provide dedicated air fryer instructions on packaging, leaving widespread preparation friction and missed retail conversion opportunities.
The findings highlight commercial opportunities for frozen and chilled food processors to capture market share by adapting on-pack preparation guidance, reformulating products for convection heating, and addressing dayparts beyond evening dining.
The Packaging Instruction Deficit
The NFRA report demonstrates that while the appliance has transitioned from a novelty kitchen gadget to an everyday fixture found in seven out of ten US homes, consumer usage remains narrowly focused on a small number of core items such as french fries, coated poultry nuggets, and reheated pizza.
For food brand owners and private-label manufacturers, the primary barrier to expanding consumption is the absence of validated preparation parameters. With roughly 67% of frozen and chilled stock-keeping units (SKUs) still lacking air-fryer-specific cook times and temperatures, consumers face trial-and-error cooking, which often results in inconsistent texture and food waste.
The study indicates that manufacturers that prominently feature air fryer directions on primary display panels and back-of-pack instruction decks can lower adoption barriers and drive repeat purchase rates across mainstream frozen categories.
Economic Drivers and Changing Meal Occasions
The research links increased benchtop appliance usage to wider macroeconomic shifts in household food expenditure.
Home-cooked meals currently average $1.94 per eating occasion compared to $8.41 for commercial restaurant meals. That $6.47 cost disparity has expanded by more than a dollar since 2019. With approximately 90% of consumers expressing concern regarding food inflation across grocery and dining channels, households are increasingly substituting away from foodservice in favour of convenient domestic meals.
Operational efficiencies reinforce this transition:
Speed: 65% of surveyed users identify air fryers as significantly faster than conventional ovens.
Energy Efficiency: 93% of respondents consider the appliance to be highly energy-efficient compared to full-sized thermal appliances.
These technical attributes make the appliance a sustainable tool for routine home cooking, providing rapid heating that discourages last-minute foodservice ordering.

Multi-Daypart Expansion and Category Growth
While occasional users predominantly limit air fryer use to evening dinner preparation, the NFRA data indicates that high-frequency users utilise the platform across morning, daytime, and late-night snacking occasions.
This behavioural shift creates immediate runway for product categories across the grocery perimeter and central freezer cabinets:
Remote-Work Lunch Occasions: With approximately 25% of the full-time US workforce operating remotely from home, demand has climbed for quick lunchtime meal solutions that prepare faster than standard oven bakes or delivery routes.
Breakfast and Morning Goods: High-speed preparation of frozen breakfast proteins, waffles, pastries, and filled morning items.
Snack and Appetiser Arrays: High-frequency rotation of finger foods, vegetable bites, and party snacks for afternoon child feeding and evening grazing.
Centre-Plate Frozen Meals: Frozen potato specialities, unbreaded poultry cuts, and prepared single-serve meal trays capable of achieving crispy textures through dry convective heat.
The NFRA study concludes that the limitation in appliance utility does not stem from appliance capabilities, but rather from a lack of consumer awareness and clear manufacturer guidance, marking a clear operational opening for frozen food brand owners.
